Why do people rape?

I was sitting in the hospital the other day waiting for my appointment when I noticed pamflets about rape being displayed in the waiting room. I looked at it and the first thought I had was "this thing makes it sound like its my fault if I was raped." It said that rape can be provoked by low cut shirts and reveling clothing as well as inappropriate behavior. While I understand that, yes these thing could be a factor, I honestly doubt that these are the "true" reasons for rape. I'm not saying all men are rapists I'm just saying that the amount of blame shoveled on women when they are raped is rediculus. (I'm not saying that women should be automatically set free, BECAUSE WOMEN RAPE MEN AS WELL and they should not be treated lightly for it either) I'm wondering if the main reasons why people rape is because they want their victims attention (in a good or bad way) and attain it by forced sexual activity. Any ideas?

  • Rape is NOT about sexual behavior per se.
It is all about absolute fear, control and violence.

Yes, blaming the victim happens in rape. It also happens throughout human society. Again, it's all about total control.

    And it sucks.

  • I've never seen any pamphlet make such a claim nor any data support such a claim.

Tbh 'why people rape' research is often terrible and goes overboard in the opposite direction, making claims based purely on feminist theories about patriarchy and then jumping through absurd logical hoops to explain the frequent cases of same sex or female initiated sexual violence.

Rape is a crime of sexual desire, power and opportunity.

  • I think the guys that do rape, don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning this behavior at all but, I can see how this happens and I think society can be blamed for a lot of it. There are beautiful women everywhere and they are portrayed in the media in EVERYTHING. Guys are visual so we see this all day long every single day. To add to that, women dressing sexy/hot, some in revealing clothes and add maybe a very flirty attitude with some women, yet no sex for the guy. Guys get turned down all the time. It's like being starving and having your favorite food dangled in front of you face constantly but you can't eat it. Now, again, I'm not saying it's women's fault, and guys should be able to control themselves but I'm just saying I can see what drives this behavior. For some guy I think it's a dominance thing also (fetish) but they go about it in the wrong way for sure.

  • I hate men that rape

  • That's a weird thing for a serious pamphlet to say. The only time I can think of a real instance of shifting blame to women is in Germany over New Year's and that's basically because of political correctness gone mad to the point where it's eating itself.

I think if you add up all the research you'd find it's not what you're wearing but how vulnerable you look. Confidently walking down the street in a short skirt is less likely to get you trouble than wearing jeans and looking around nervously as you move. Wear whatever you want because it's broadcasting that you're vulnerable that matters most.

And this is pretty much only in the case where the perp is a stranger lurking in the bushes. Most rape comes from someone you know and in the home or a friend's home which generally means what you're wearing is a non-issue.

As for the reason for rape, most of the time it's a pathological condition believed to be cause by previous trauma: 60-80% of male rapists experienced sexual abuse from a female when they were younger, and that's the strongest correlation there is for the rape of women by men.

Because of their pathology, these men are repeat offenders. So you have a few psychos raping multiple women, which is why although most rape victims know their rapist you really shouldn't be scared of your friends or boyfriend. Take solace in the fact that it takes a serious pathological condition to get a guy to rape. Oddly, we don't see the same correlation in women who rape. That is to say, it's not pathological. So the reason you suggested would be more of a possibility in women who rape men.

  • Because they're sick in the head and even animals are better than some people.
