Why do people think gender roles exist?

Gender roles have swapped frequently over the course of humanity and swap among countries. Why do many people insist that certain gender must act a certain way? If you look at how the founding American fathers dressed you would see make-up, nylons and high-heels. But many people like to play ignorant and assume that men have always dressed in a wife-beater tank top and jeans. Or that women aren't supposed to be promiscuous. But during the medieval period women were promiscuous and the men were supposed to be chaste. Is this why many conservative states want to ban teaching history?

  • I think at some point there’s this like aftershock in history of ridged abusive upbringing, like people being beaten at schools n shit. I don’t know years or anything, but it seems like there’s a generational trauma that we’re Collectively working through kindof. Plus the modern interconnectedness of everything and being able to show the huge range of human behaviors. Like that’s a super recent thing evolutionarily, so I think it’s just going to take time, but there’ll always be people who hold onto traditions I think. I just personally believe in personal freedom, and I try not to judge how other people choose to live their lives. Maybe the large overarching issue is people projecting insecurities. Like the most vocal Anti Gay people turning out to be Gay AF at a gay orgy with drugs, like that sad internal hypocrisy of being so angry at a group of people who are comfortable living how they feel inside, but they’re too conflicted because of how they grew up to accept themselves and do what they want.

  • People want everyone to fit their idea of gender roles because it befits them personally. Simple as that.

  • Absolutely yes. although there are baselines.

  • That’s fashion not gender roles

    • I clearly posted the difference between a woman's role now vs the medieval period. Women were promiscuous and it was okay, opposed to now where we have slut shaming.

    • Definition of gender roles: Gender roles in society means how we're expected to act, speak, dress, groom, and conduct ourselves based upon our assigned sex.

  • I think it's just tradition and people's fear of breaking tradition. I also think that it's perpetuated these days by people that don't understand the difference between being and doing. Gender roles are what people do, or at least what people think that they should do. What you do doesn't change what you are. Putting on a dress and wearing makeup doesn't make you a girl. Playing in the mud with trucks doesn't make you a boy. I don't understand why this is so difficult for people.

  • Necessity.
    Life has been historically difficult.
Everyone needed to do whatever they could to live.
What really DOES bug the shit out of me are those whining about demands for equality - but only to a certain extent.

  • I get the impression you don't understand what gender roles actually are.

    • Promiscuity is not a gender role.

    • yes it is. Telling men it's their job to be players and women need to be modest is a gender role.

    • No, you didn't. You posted things men and women used to do and wear, but nothing about gender roles.
