Rape is rape is rape, regardless of who it happens to or who does it. A lot of this attitude, in my personal experience, stems from the traditional roles that society has allotted to each gender. Men are viewed as strong and sex-driven, and so society views them as not being capable of being raped. If it’s a conventionally attractive rapist, then “he must have wanted it”, and if it’s a conventionally unattractive rapist then it’s a funny joke. This is an absolutely abhorrent view and is incredibly damaging to survivors. Furthermore, there has been almost no effort - again, in my personal and anecdotal experience- to challenge this view by so-called “men’s rights activists”. The only time male survivors are mentioned by these groups is when they are used to silence criticism of rape culture by women. Gender stereotypes and gender roles are the reason that male survivors are seen as jokes or dismissed entirely, and this attitude has to change.
