Guys, why do some of you legitimately hold open a door & let someone go first... and others go through a door first & hold it open behind you?

I've noticed that with some guys. Some will stand aside & hold open a door, letting someone go through first. And then there's others who will go through first & legitimately hold the door open behind them (not like let it drift close, they hold it till you grab it and/or pass through too).

Is the first typical situation just general manners & the second good manners + protective instinct.

I do both, depending on the situation. If there's any chance of a threat on the other side of the door, I go through first. If a threat is more likely on the outside, then I hold the door and let her enter first.

I also walk on the road side of the sidewalk, with her on the inside and a half-step in front of me, so I can be aware of threats from all directions. When seated in a booth, I always sit on the outside and facing the door/room. I scan for exits whenever I enter a new room. In any sketchy area, I put her in the car first, and have her lock her door, before I go around and get in, and I get out first and go around and open her door.

These are all just automatic for me. I use to compete in pistol competitions and I have a lot of safety training and security training, and these are just things that I do without even thinking. If something happens, I already know exactly what to do, so I'm not going to stand around trying to figure it out - I act. That kind of thing has gotten me out of trouble a few times - including escaping a huge drunken brawl in New Orleans one time.

I do either. It depends on the door itself. If it opens in, I go first and hold it. If it opens out, I let her through first.

It depends on how long it takes me to notice you. If I don't see you before going through I hold it behind me. If I do, I hold in front of me.

Guess the second is something I was taught young and ever since I've always done. Wouldn't want to let a lady walk into a burning room first 🤣
