Why do some people still call homosexuality a mental illness?

In 1973, members of the American Psychiatric Association voted to remove homosexuality from the DSM

I have seen more than one user on this website this year call homosexuality a mental illness.

Im not a doctor but I personally don’t see why homosexuality would be considered a mental illness.

Homosexuality doesn’t cause people to see things that aren’t there, hear voices or experience extreme sadness, anger or misery.

If a gay person is feeling sad or depressed I think that would most likely be because they are struggling to get accepted by others for being gay.

Not because of homosexuality itself.

  • It’s because they want to discredit what they don’t like. Psychiatry has evolved a lot in 50 years and it’s understood that sexual preference is hard wired. It isn’t some kind of disorder that afflicts someone. These hateful ideas about homosexuality are rooted in bullshit mythological religions. It’s time people stopped using fairy tales to attack others for the crime of being different.

  • I'm not sure but it's insulting to those that really have mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

  • I believe strongly that it is a form of mental illness. Something isn’t right as far as mental wiring and attraction toward the opposite. As human beings we are physically designed as male/female being each other’s physical counterparts and that’s how we survive as a species through procreation. Its reality that the penis belongs in the vagina. Its reality that the man has components that make sperm, that sperm is then mobilized by semen which is then inseminated into the woman’s vagina made to lubricate and stimulate the penis perfectly to ejaculation, the sperm then finds the egg and starts cell division, which then attaches to the uterus and grows for 9 months. Its a perfect system!

Its reality that the penis does not belong in the anus regardless if its the anus of a man or a woman!

Society can try to use whatever explanation it wants to try to normalize something, but if anyone uses even a lick of logic, it’s quite evident that homosexuality is not compatible or natural. I will not participate in a lie to try to normalize something that is quite clearly a disability or illness of some sort. To do so, it’s a disservice to society including those who are gay

    • Do you agree with this? If a gay person is feeling sad or depressed I think that would most likely be because they are struggling to get accepted by others for being gay I thought this because it’s true the LGBT community are more likely to be targeted by bullying or crimes. Being verbally or physically abused can cause anybody including people not apart of the LGBT community to feel sad or angry.

  • Because homosexuality is not a natural behavior. It's a deviation. Everything that has deviation can be called an illness. Humans and animals aren't supposed to be homosexuals. And by the way, question to christians: what would God say to Noah if he was a homosexual and brought all homosexual animals on an Ark? He wouldn't say anything, he would just destroy them all and start everything from the beginning and proclaimed his work as failed one.

  • My inexpert opinion.
I think there are degrees of born-in predisposition toward homosexuality. Some boys, like actor Rock Hudson flip, despite exhibiting masculinity, some, like Willem Dafoe, don't, despite leaning the other way. I don't think that predisposition is mental illness any more than being gifted, or not, to mathematics.

But that predisposition can be combined with other mental issues like Bi-Polar or OCD and be expressed with radicalism. Some gay men, like Johnny Mathis, keep to themselves, others "go nuts" with it.

I MAY have had a predisposition to homosexuality that could have been hard wired by my experiences with and the horrible death of my mother. but positive childhood experiences with a gal pal may have redirected me.

    One man's opinion.

  • Back in the 60's some strict catholic groups had "camps" that were supposed to get rid of the evils of homosexuality in your mind and spirit. Obviously these camps didn't work as intended.

  • Narrow minded fools.
