Why do we refer to performing fellatio as giving a 'blowjob" ?

A girlfriend, asked me one time that she was confused by the term 'blowjob', since "I don't 'blow' on his penis, I usually 'suck it' or just go up and down on it, and I thought I was supposed to 'blow" on it"?

Such a 'mind bending' question, and I fear if we don't get a good answer, I fear it may "rend the very fabric of society"? I am positive that men like Socrates, and Plato, pondered these kinds of abstract, brain teasers, themselves, and so it behooves me to present it to those deep thinkers of GAG to dig into the archives of Greek and Roman literature to find the nature of the term "blowjob"

I am sure my girlfriend and I will not rest until we find the answer.

Why is it called a blowjob?

A quick search of this on the Internet will yield almost five million hits in 0.1 second. So many forums have this question posted, and it ranges from health websites to technology websites. Below are some of the “explanations” offered by our online community.

In England, a really long time ago, blow was slang for ejaculate.
It’s from a time in England when prostitutes were known as blowsies.
Linguists think the sexual connotation of “blow job” evolved from “blowoff,” an expression meaning to finish off, to climax, to end.
Maybe cause ‘suck job’ doesn’t sound as attractive.
Blow Job is slang from 1933, as to blow someone off, originally used among prostitutes.
It’s called a blow job, because when you do it, the penis is poking into your cheek, makes your cheeks look like you are blowing.
Fellatio was once known as a “below job” for obvious reasons. The term has since been shortened to “b’lowjob” or simply “blowjob”. (According to what I know, “below job” was used a service that prostitutes gave because it wasn’t something a classy woman would do, so therefore, that job was below the norm.)
The etymology of words and slangs has always been fascinating. In this case, the problem is that there are many debates to justify why the word “blow” is used today. So many people have wondered this and even some women are worried that they are doing it incorrectly! I took a quick poll and called up a handful of guy and girl friends to asked them this question. The guys said, “I don’t know” and the girls said, “I don’t care”. Even more interestingly, some of the girls also asked how to give better blowjobs too. It’s no surprise to me, given all of the advice and tips that are printed in magazines and currently existing on the internet, that women can be confused.

Therefore, I have devised an answer that will kill two birds with one stone. Yes, that’s right – a scientifically explained answer as to why it should be called a blowjob and with that same explanation help women improve their oral sex skills. Daunting task, huh?

  • It is related to “blowoff” and it simply refers to the explosive climax.. and it’s her job lol

  • blowjob = blowing a load... in someone's mouth... so you don't blow it at all necessarily but intent is to stimulate a guy's penis where he cums in your mouth... giving head = the best part for a guy's penis is working his head either kissing licking and sucking iit especially giving him a lot of tongue action around the vein.

    • Mmmmmm. very descriptive Chrissy. That's usually the kind of answers I give

    • i think girl's enjoy it too for sure

    • I have given some very descriptive answers to questions, about eating girls etc, and 'earlier' on GAG they did not like that and deleted my answer, but I suppose they have 'softened' in that respect. One time I did that, with "loves2learn" and she 'Messaged" me: "Is it getting warm in here"? and I replied to her, "well that was my intent, to raise a few women's body temp. and she said "Mission Accomplished" So, yes, I think women like 'descriptive" also' Thanks

  • I would rather say fellatio than blowjob.

  • Who knows

  • Wdum? Coz u blow…

  • The term "giving head" is even dumber.

    • My wife did not know what the term "giving head" meant. She thought it referred to the Head of the penis, and I was told it referred to the fact that the penis was in the 'head", 'skull" etc of the giver. Hell, who knows or really cares?

    • They should just call it oral sex and go with that.

    • True. Everyone seems to have a different idea of what to call it.

  • I don't know because you do the job until they blow?
