Kind of reminds me of the skin whitening ads in Korea back on vacation. There was the culture aspect of tanned meant they were likely outdoor labor worker, and that pale white was likely someone aligned to more wealth. Versus this side of the world tanning and it's beds are popular because people like the tone. People have preferences just it's not one in the same in every culture.
