Why do you think girls are so unwilling to accept that they're wearing the wrong bra size?

  • Let's not put ALL the blame on the gals. They've been fighting an uphill battle with manufacturers and retailers for a while now.

    Manufacturers-
Want to make a profit? Less labor and less material = More money.
Forget about cup piecing or stitching in mass-produced bras.
It's cut. It's post-formed (many cups are now just formed-foam-sheeting), not petalled and circular-stitched as with "bullet-bras", etc., from the 50's-60's.
Have the work done in the third-world countries.
Use less size variations. Instead of discrete inch size bands and A-B-C-D cups, some makers now have "everyday bras" with small, medium and large sizes with stretchy cups- THREE sizes- instead of 20 (5 bands x 4 cups).

Retailers-Professional corsetieres are on the endangered retailer species list. Usually relatively small shops, the corsetieres have been largely overshadowed by big box stores such as Wal-Mart, Costco, etc. And it's not like these stores have a certified fitter at every location every hour they are open. They might not even have a dedicated retail So the gals just go to their big box or clothing retailer, try on a couple , and take the one that is least objectionable.

Gals, then, the only recourse is to shop at smaller stores, being a bit more flexible in what you will accept. Seek the help of an experienced fitter, write down the band and overbust size when they mention each item, and keep the info handy,

  • There is huge pressure on ladies (starting from teens at least). Fitting in having similar sizes. I think a lot of it starts in high school. then they may get mis-sized or unwilling to get resized throughout life as our bodies change.

my wife went through this. I had to constantly tell her I don’t care what size it is as long as you are comfortable, it’s sexy, you’ll put it on and take it off for me. 😂

but getting a bigger one may make you feel like you’re gaining weight. Wearing a smaller one may be embarrassing for size. Women really have a no win scenario and need confidence and lots of positive encouragement. And people who know what they are doing in those stores and departments that specialize in this stuff.

  • I used to be a bra specialist and this was funny to see. a lot of women are aware they are wearing the wrong size but many bras have certain aspects that are beneficial to others. Like bigger women don't get many pretty bras that are cheap. So they'll find smaller cute patterned ones. Also certain straps are wide someone will look for skinny straps on a bra they don't fit well cause it'll fit tank tops better etc. Let's face it its a bitch to find a good bra so many of us go for ones that fit our needs or standards.

  • I don’t have an issue admitting it. I lost 25 lbs. my bras are too big now, but they’re too expensive to just replace.

    • I know some affordable places! Check out the abrathatfits calculator to determine your size :)

What Girls & Guys Said

  • I don't know, but I've literally told at least two dozen women that they were wearing the wrong bra size, and a couple of them I even went shopping with them to get the right size. There was always resistance at first, but most were VERY appreciative once they had the right size and it was actually far more comfortable and far more supportive.

  • Well, I suspect when they hear it from guys, they think we're just being lecherous; that we just want to see their breasts. Our society has some very warped ideas about sex when it gives the impression that lust and compassion are mutually exclusive.

    • Maybe, I was talking about when they hear it from girls though (girls who understand bra sizing well)

    • Then I don't know what to tell you. Maybe they're annoyed at the implication that you're... I guess you'd call it "womaning" better than they are.

    • Maybe! Society and bra companies feed us so many lies about bra sizing, so it can be hard to accept that you've been thinking wrongly about something for your whole life. So that's understandable. I've been there.

  • Why are you so obsessed with this shit, but always ask and comment anonymously?

    • Because as you can see from the comments, people don't know anything about this 'shit', and they should. It's these societal perceptions (along with the fact that bra stores measure people wrong) that are to blame for so many women wearing the wrong size. As for the anonymous thing, I don't know, it's a habit, I'll probably come off anon next time.

    • I thought for a sec that your comment was on my other question (about the size 26E) - if you read the comments under that question you'll see how bad people's understanding of bra sizing is.

  • Are they?

    • Yes, very! The majority of women wear the wrong bra size and have a very bad misunderstanding of how bra sizing works (this is society and bra companies fault, though, so it's understandable) and get angry if another girl tries to help them.

  • I simply have no choice. My boobs are too small for normal bras

    • No boobs are too small for normal bras! Try the abrathatfits calculator :)

    • Anon - what bra cup size yours then if yours are too small for a bra

    • @Asker but it is. My boobs doesn't even fill out an A cup

  • I assume some wear them too small to provide added cleavage. Also, some requiring sizes that aren't available at typical retailers may not want to spend the money for good fitting from specialty stores.

    • True, a too-small bra will give that 'butt-crack' cleavage that some people want

    • ( . ) ( . )

  • Confidence breaker

    • Hmm, I don't know! Most girls are wearing a TOO SMALL cup size

    • Oh I don't know maybe it makes them look bigger?

    • I don't know, a properly fitted bra usually improves shape and posture due to the support it gives

  • Bcoz we never wear wrong bra

    • Trust me, we do! The bra fitters in stores measure girls wrong all the time

    • I have tried various types of size before selecting right one

    • Sometimes what looks and feels like the 'right one' can still be wrong because of the narrow size range that stores carry. So many people need bands below 32 and yet so few stores sell these.

    • Show All
  • Because they feel right on them. It feels right and supportive on my boobs

    • This could be part of it! Bras can feel comfortable even when they're the wrong size

    • The lady walked me through my sizing and explained everything thing very thoroughly

    • A huge amount of bra fitters measure people wrong on purpose so that they can keep their size ranges as narrow as possible

  • people hate admitting they're wrong

    • This is probably part of it!

  • Because who can even figure out what their bra size even is? It varies so much from company to company and country to country, it's ridiculous!

    • And plus, bra fitters measure people wrong! The only way to figure out your size is by measuring yourself

    • Even that doesn't work! My poor girlfriend has been measuring and measuring, and it's still a mess! Especially in cup size! She's DD in one company's size, DDD in another's, and then like an H for another European company we think? Senseless! The whole thing! You poor women! I never knew!

    • Oh my gosh, I can't recommend this enough: the abrathatfits calculator. Grab a measuring tape and show her this calculator online, it changed my life!! The problem is probably that she's wearing the wrong size - I could be wrong, but the calculator will tell you for sure

  • Is this a common problem? Perhaps they feel slutty being a larger size?

  • Why would any girl do that?

    • It can be hard to accept things when you've gone through your whole life thinking differently

    • I understand now.

  • Maybe they wear one they think looks good, not one that fits well.

    • Maybe!!

  • Female ego.

    • Maybe!

  • Because they think it looks right

    • Probably!

  • I think they genuinely don’t know, should get it measures at vs or sth

    • Oh lord, huge no-no! Victoria's Secret are notorious for measuring people wrong!

    • Ooh oops I’m from Europe hahah

    • No worries! Most stores measure people wrong, not just VS :)
