Why do you think people take “breaks” in relationships?

One reason I routinely want breaks from my family is that I want to feel I have a choice and I'm not a chained slave. Like if I go several hours without feedback from my parents, I feel like listening to them is optional and I'm doing it out of interest and curiosity and belief in their values. But if they never give me more then one hour or five minutes without giving me instructions or judgment, I feel like I'm they are forcing themselves on me, and not an option and I'm expressing somebody else's interest and not my own.

I never really understood or what to do when the girl said we need to take a break. I didn’t know if could I date other women while she could, are we just getting each other nerves or do we need to slow down or change the relationship. I sometimes thought she wanna check her options while I had to wait for her to decide which I though was unfair and If I did something that she was doing I was in the wrong. I just feel like woman is calling a break as a substitute word for she gonna cheat on me and anything I do is me cheating.

A "break" is just a means of breaking up without admitting that's what you're doing, without having the break up talk, without feeling guilty about seeing your partner cry. It's bullshit for little boys and girls who don't know how to have a real relationship!

It could be any of that stuff to be honest. My sister and her boyfriend have been together for 10 years and have taken two relationship breaks. It kind of has to do whether or not if they come back around , and if you are willing to accept the possibility of them sleeping with someone else.

Breaks lead to the end of things cause they want to be free and like it. When they need alone time.

People take breaks because something is not working and they can't figure out how to address the problem. It is often a prelude to ending the non working relationship.

Breaks are a pretty complicated topic. Usually though, I'd say the goal is to give both people the physical and emotional distance they need to evaluate their relationship honestly. That can be hard to do when you're with them all the time.

Breaks are a sign of immaturity in almost all cases. For most, it means they can't communicate -- either to work something out or that they can't get to the point to maturely admit it isn't working and break up.

I would take a break if my girlfriend asked for it but i would never initiate that. It would give me a lot of anxiety but i would try to accept it if she felt like she really needed it?

They want to break up but don't have the balls or they want to test the waters with someone else but keep their partner on standby.

Anyone who doesn't just dump and walk away for life when asked for a "break" is a fool.

I think it's because they want things to work out, and feel the only way to do it is to take the break. However I don't believe in taking breaks, if we are done we are done
