I don't know the actual reason why, but I always interpreted it as being because Asians in general are more prone to that sorta thing I guess? Because in Asian culture it's a bigger deal than in American culture if one sees a girl's panties or something so it's their brain freaking out in a sorta violent reaction and a nosebleed results. I know that in real life people get nosebleeds when their brain is hyperactive or overstimulated, so I think that's just the case and how they decided to demonstrate it in anime. Not sure if this is the actual reason it's just my theory. Hope it helps!
I think that the idea is you blush from arousal so there's a lot of extra blood up in your head and it causes a nosebleed from pressure. They don't mean it like it actually happens, it's all just used for comedic effect and because they usually can't show someone getting an erection or whatever, so it's kinda like a code for it :P But yeah, totally just a jokey way of getting around censorship.

Well, I just know it was a visual shorthand for arousal based off the fact that arousal causes a rise in blood pressure and blood spewing out of your nose is pretty severe blood pressure. But really, that's just a guess. Some say it comes from an old Japanese wives' tale. Some say it's in Japanese folklore. Nobody actually knows...
Because Japanese porn is weird you can show a woman being raped by a giant octopus with tentacles but not actual normal consensual sex. They aren't allowed to show any public hair at all and the penis or any penetration mustn't be shown. Nose bleeds are meant to demonstrate ejaculation. No wonder Japanese boys are messed up.
