Bestiality is illegal because of ignorance stemming from misconceptions about reproduction from ancient times. Bestiality has always been a hidden but common practice. Until religion got involved in the practice it was common but carried a stigma especially for women. In most ancient cultures the belief was that when a man’s "seed" was placed in a woman it "festered" or swelled into a child so woman became known as a "vessel" for his seed. So that misconception made the path for condemnation of all types of sex practices like homosexuality, oral sex, anal sex, masturbation, and bestiality. Basically anything that did not result in pregnancy is condemned by most religions thus it is condemned by religion controlled society. I would think that we live in an enlightened enough age that we can look logically at bestiality and realize that it has always been a part of the natural world around us. It has always been a part of human sexuality. It will always be a common, albeit hidden, practice just like homosexuality used to be. Taboos against practices like bestiality, incest, pedophilia, necrophilia, and many others only exist because society condemns them on religious grounds. The severity of those taboos is gauged not by the harm done but by how commonplace the practice of the act is.
In my opinion bestiality is a lot more common in today’s society than it was in antiquity especially in educated industrialized societies. This is contrary to the belief that everyone that practices bestiality is mentally retarded, fat, ugly, lives on a farm, and can’t find human sex partners.
As to the issue of consent, animals can and often do initiate sex with humans we just do not understand their signals. Although a dog can’t say “hey babe lets ditch this party and go somewhere private” they can tell you in a way you can understand that they like you and want sex with you by grabbing you and …. well you get the picture. This is not a “dominance” display it is a sex or mating display. As long as the animal isn’t harmed then who’s business is it? It certainly isn’t the governments business what we do in our bedrooms or who we love.
So why is bestiality illegal? Because the predominate religion in your society says so.
