In modern times, it's common for women to have multiple partners and that's fine because with the invention of birth control, the consequences of pregnancy is minimal. Before this invention, pregnancy is a grave consequence requiring large amounts of resources. Thus, women have to be very selective in their mate, and as such, women have always been the gate-keepers to sexual activity. By not being selective, it shows a lack of good judgement for investing in the future.

However, we are in modern times, why would there be a reason for not accepting promiscuity? There is a general consensus that everyone is okay with casual ore-marital sex. It's always been easier for the average girl to lose her virginity at parties than it is for the average guy. Every drunk guy is trying to get in her pants, while most guys strike out often. I think the issue right now is that many guys think that not having sex makes you a boring guy and that you failed in a sense. I blame the pickup society. They hit on literally every woman and say “it’s a numbers game”

For the average woman, being a virgin would be a choice because she can have a lot of guys if she wants. For the average guy being a virgin is, unless he abstains for religious reasons, seen as being a failure with women because it is assumed he cannot even get one.

I don't personally see it this way, but here's my guess at the logic behind such thinking:

Supply and demand. Girls have a lot more opportunities for sex then guys, so not taking it and remaining "pure" is seen as good. If a guy hasn't had sex he probably didn't have the chance and must be a loser.
