It's mostly due to the strong influence of religion and morality activism starting in the 1890s. Prior to that, prostitution was either legal or tolerated in most states.

Unfortunately, the prohibition didn't really work out as hoped, which is almost always the case. It hasn't really decreased prostitution - which exists everywhere - but it did deliver the business into the hands of criminals, and ended up vastly increasing the danger and social costs of the women.

I think cause prostitution can involve drugs and sex trafficking with a possibility of unplanned pregnancy and STDs. In the outskirts Vegas there a place called the Bunny Ranch where you can pay for sex where it's legal and it all controlled like a business. There no drugs allowed, all the girls are clean and on birth control, and the girl are actually intelligent and beautiful.

It’s legal on a state to state basis. It’s illegal because of shame and prudes in office who don’t care about sex workers well being and safety.

Prostitution is not actually illegal throughout the US. It is actually a state crime instead of federal. All but one state, Nevada, have laws prohibiting it. In Nevada, it is allowed in some rural counties.

Though it is illegal in most states, not a federal crime, in many places it is available via escort and massage services, and it's not often enforced.

It isn't illegal everywhere. Most states think it is a state decision and since it should be illegal in several parts, it has to illegal everywhere. Nevada sees it as a municipal decision and thus it is legal several places in Nevada (despite what people say, Begas is not one of them).

Aside from religious bullshite, the issue is it brings in more money than any job out there. The usa was built on prostitution brothels paying for schools to be built, along with many other things. Prostitution also makes it easy to get info and blackmail too, So many politicians feared prostitution could hide foreign spies.
