Why is religion so obsessed with virginity?

Why is virginity viewed by religion as a commodity? It’s a man made construct that we place a persons value on, it’s totally insane.

Ok, I’m going to explain this for you. Go back to a time when you had to work/build/create everything you had. There were no grocery stores or food stamps. At that time, raising children was VERY expensive. In addition to being resource intensive, there’s the need to protect them from physical harm…from neighboring tribes and/or wild animals.

If you - as a father - were expending that much in time and resources protecting your children, you’d want to ensure to the best of your ability that you were raising YOUR children. Not someone else’s genetic line. The best way to do this is to marry someone who has not had sex with anyone else. If their only sexual experience is with you, then you help ensure you’re raising your children.

The idea of virginity comes from the idea of honesty and virtue. There are many things that can break virginity - rape, injury etc that the person has little control over. But the persons honesty and virtue will always be intact. Hence it's not talking about the sexual aspect, but the personality aspect of the individual.

A whore or philandering bum will never possess honesty or virtue. But no one is going to ask if you're a whore or philanderer, are they? Sheesh, how do people like you survive to your age? Your parents must really give you a sheltered life!

Normally people post questions like these and I become triggered. However, your second sentence saved me the trouble - you are 100% correct! Virginity holds no value unless you are the virgin - and only then if you care enough to keep yourself in that state for yourself or someone else. Religion itself is the most ridiculous construct ever created - closely followed by money. I valued it growing up in a church-forced childhood, and even when I lost it there was value. Looking back, it is a silly stigma we place on boys and exponentially more on young girls.

For me as I want a virgin guy, it's not a man made construct. I just don't want a guy who has been with many girls and who will remember his times with them, because remembering is probably inebitable.
I want a guy who places importance on sex too, because I place some importance to it.

Religious texts are old. Virginity was desirable because it meant the woman was neither pregnant nor infected with an STD. Women were married in their teens so remaining chaste for a couple of years after puberty was reasonable. It’s absurd when people marry in their mid-twenties in an age of effective contraception and testing.
