If any mediocre/ugly woman could do it, it would hold no value at all. Hell, I go on Instagram sometimes and even Instagram "models" are only like 1-5% of women. The only difference is, they are 5'11" *plus-sized* women, as opposed to 5'11", size 0 women.
And honestly, that's how it should be. Even women admit they wouldn't buy clothing that ugly or obese women were wearing. Models are based off of what people WANT to be, not what they ARE. We don't need short (under 5'7"), ugly, and obese people being professional models. And there is now a niche market for that on Instagram, for the ones who want to do that anyway (although it's still not that lucrative and most people still don't aspire to look *less* attractive than they already are).
I'm not even a woman and I get why women don't want ugly, short, or obese women modeling clothes for them. Fashion is literally based on nothing more than being "cool and attractive." That's it. There's no other reason to wear clothing that isn't comfortable and does what it's supposed to do. Trying to change things just because a few people are insecure and entitled (not necessarily you, OP) is stupid.
In any given year, there are probably 100,000+ girls who would be a model if they could, all fighting for maybe 10 open positions. That means 10,000 girls fighting for every available position. They can afford to be EXTREMELY picky, and the fashion industry prefers women who are extremely tall and extremely thin, because they believe those women photograph the best. They are essentially hiring human clothes hangers to show off their clothes, and tall and thin is what they want. And with such a huge supply-to-demand ratio, they'll have no trouble getting what they want.
No one ever said that life was fair.
Because fashion designers like women who are tall enough to fit into their samples sizes which are made a little large to begin with. Also Sports Illustrated Swim and Victoria Secret like their woman tall, curvy and with long legs because it’s a sexy features.
Don’t give up on your dream. There are all types of models.. They aren’t all tall, either. Get some headshots, build a portfolio, gain a following in social media. It’s definitely not impossible! Best of luck, girlie! 😘❤️

Most modeling agencies won't bat an eye. They have endless amounts of women trying to get in. Just because you can't doesn't mean you're not worth as much as them.
My advice? Find local photographers. Get a social media following. I do nude photography in Maryland and have connected with many models; most of which would never be considered for those agencies, and a good number of them make decent money just booking shoots.

Because they are obsessed with beauty which means tall women with long legs, curves, facial beauty etc. They only find attractiveness in women who are tall for some reason. But it’s been that way for decades so don’t expect it to change.
If I were you I wouldn’t even waste my time trying to model. It’s a short lived job and the chances of you becoming a super model are slim to none. You are better off having a regular career.
