These societal rules developed out of biological reality. Men and women have VERY different roles and responsibilities in reproduction, and for most of civilized human history, your birth (meaning: who your parents were, and the circumstances of your birth) determined the entire rest of your life.

We have about 8,000 years of written human history, and about 150-200,000 years of anthropological history to go by, and anywhere there was more than a couple of families of humans living and working together, you had at least a rudimentary civilization, and thus you had hierarchies, and those hierarchies were largely based on birth. Most nobles were nobles because they were born into a noble family, not because they themselves earned their way in. And if you weren't a noble, you were a peasant, and you would almost certainly die a peasant, because upward social mobility was very rare - there wasn't much of a middle class until the Industrial Revolution.

And prior to the 20th Century, the closest thing people had to “celebrity gossip” was discussions about the families of noblemen, and speculations on who the father of a given child was - and that was important stuff, because that often determined who would lead the country or whether there would be a disagreement that could lead to war - and wars inevitably lead to mass death and widespread despair.

In most societies/civilizations, only a legitimate child (a child born of a wedded couple) could inherit anything - the family name, any titles or nobility, lands and incomes, and family wealth. Thus, if your wife was sleeping around and got pregnant from another man, that was going to cause huge problems for your family, and those problems often devolved into nobles fighting each other (with armies conscripted of their own peasants, who were largely the ones to be maimed and killed in the fighting). Men fathering bastard children wasn’t uncommon, and was more accepted, given that men’s jobs often kept them away from home for extended periods of time - but they generally didn’t bring their bastard children home either, while children born of the wife were assumed to be fathered by the husband - unless the husband had been away 11 months or unless the white couple had an ethnic baby or whatever. Having a bastard child in the home was a big stigma, and mostly on the woman (because, again, men generally didn’t bring home their bastard children).

You would also have situations where the eldest son was illegitimate, and a younger son was legitimate, but the older son would still fight for inheritance, and again, sides would be taken and a lot of innocent peasants would be maimed and killed and have their houses and barns burned and their animals slaughtered or stolen, which would mean the family would starve to death.

You can see why cheating - which prior to 1960 commonly led to illegitimate pregnancies - was considered a big deal, and why it was mostly focused on the women rather than the men.

A guy can knock up thousands of women and flee asap and still spread his seeds around. Even if they die often, there would be a lot of them left. That means every hot guy out there will do that. He will score as many girl as possible and will do anything to score.

A woman can be similar as she would really like to score as many as possible in a short period of time to let all the sperm fight it out. That way she would get the best of the best. However, she can only get pregnant about 10 times in her life. That's when she will look for a fool to take care of her and her kids.

Of course not all men are like that because there are guys who aren't hot and smooth. They know they can't get all the women so they invest in one and hope to raise 1-2 of his seeds well enough. Sort of like secure a small piece of land for life rather than traveling the world.

For women... well they usually don't. It's because as long as the fool she married didn't know, she could select the best genes and get the best security.

I think that stereotype is exaggerated and even so far as it is true you could ask why women are more accepting of promiscuous men. There is nothing stopping women from slut shaming men, but for whatever reason they don't. Women seem more likely to virgin shame men than to slut shame.

At the end of the day I think the dating dynamics are different between men and women ie women can get laid far easier and men typically have more to lose financially by trusting a promiscuous partner both of which I think contribute to this supposed double standard.

Men and women are different.


In our past, if we wanted the species to survive, it was in the species best interest for men to “spread his seeds” and women to “guard her eggs”. Men = sex with lots of women. Women = sex with only the best men.


The more women valued sex and didn’t give it away easily, the more scarce and valuable sex became. If women were to just hand out free pussy all the time, the value of pussy goes down. So people came up with social conventions like shaming tactics to prevent this from happening. Which is why we have the words “slut” and “whore”.


For men, if a lot of women wanna have sex with you, then it suggests you’re a high-value man. It’s always been that way.
