Will my doctor tell my mom I had sex?

So to start off, I’m 18- and my mom doesn’t know I have had sex. 4 months ago I called my doctors office, because I was really worried. I needed to talk to someone so they just put me on the phone with a worker. It was my first time having sex and she just listened to me and told me it was all confidential. Fast forward to now im going to the doctors tomorrow to talk about birth control (for when I get married) and my mom is coming with me. I’m terrified that somehow my doctor heard about it and will tell my mom! Will my doctor keep my secret?

  • I believe client confidentiality in non life-threatening situations, you will find different practises in obstetrics and gynaecology from a general practitioner. medical standards have it at 14 to accommodate for things like common law age of consent. I could be wrong about the United States but Canada is definitely that way.

Most Helpful Guy

  • Most likely it will not come up in your appointment, however you can either go to the appointment by yourself or ask to go into the doctor's room by your self so that way she will not find out. If they are not an option then just be honest with her if she does find out or tell her before so that you don't have to worry during the appointment and possibly have her find out then.

Most Helpful Girls

  • A doctor cannot do that in the UK. Hopefully the same standards of doctor/patient confidentiality apply where are you are as well. If not then you should make an appointment with your doctor without anyone else present.

  • If they do you can sue them for breach of doctor patient privacy.

What Girls & Guys Said

  • If you're Canadian or American, you can request your mother not accompany you into the doctors room, she can wait in the lobby. You are an adult and any release of your private information without permission is a crime.

  • What country do you live in? Regardless, I would have your mom wait in the waiting room and not accompany you during your visit with the doctor.

  • As long as no medical problems come from you having sex (std or infection and such) or from the birth control (bad reaction) they should keep it confidential

    • I just realized you said you're 18, so I see no reason for them too

  • They aren't supposed to but if they are religious they might.

  • Your Doctor/GP is governed under the patient's confidentiality act not to disclose or discuss anything concerning your health or wellbeing to anyone without your consent.

    • Okay good, so she won’t?

    • She won't because she can't. I should have added that this applies here in the UK... Obviously other Countries will have their own laws.

  • The doctors / nurses are not allowed to tell your mother anything. You are a legal age and it's against the law for them to tell her anything.

  • Hippocratic oath. Without your explicit consent - not implied consent due to her presence - your doctor may not reveal any past medical history. If you're really worried, don't take her with you.

  • he/she can't because of the fact that your fully grown and he isn't allowed to share the information with third party's. At least that's the case in my country

  • Your doctor should keep things confidential between the doctor, staff, you

  • Does your Dr. ALWAYS make it a habit of telling your mom everything? You're an adult, now so, that's YOUR private affair!!

  • Your over 18, doctors can't talk about your medical care with no one other than you

But they can if you give the doctor permission

You also have the right to not have your mom in the room with you

  • In the US they can't talk about confidential information with others without your permission. They can lose their license by doing that so they are very careful about revealing info.

  • Well it said confidential so I would say no. Just when you get the printout of the results of the visit, make sure you either hide it or tell them no printout thanks.

  • you're 19. your doctor is legally not allowed to give your mother any sort of information about your medical concerns if you don't give him written consent to do so. if you were underage, that would be a different story.

  • In the United States, not unless you give permission or if he's cool with a major, and easily winnable, lawsuit against him.

  • Likely not. It would be a HIPPA law violation, however, I'm not a lawyer, or a doctor, so I could be wrong

  • He's not supposed to because of the Hypocratic oath, but you never know with them

  • If you are 18, he will most likely see you alone to keep your privacy.

  • Thats between you and your doctor. Your mom will have no part in it. Im sure she will be very supportive of the birth control.

  • No, they shouldn't. If they do that's a violation of HIPPA.
