Your comment about who bred with who is not entirely accurate. Had a Homo Sapien male bred with a Neanderthal female, we would have Neanderthal genes in our mitochondrial DNA. However, we have never found evidence of this. On the flip side, had a Neanderthal male bred with a Homo Sapien female, we would still not have any evidence of Neanderthal genes in our mitochondrial DNA, as it's passed down exclusively from the mother.

So, you've got it reversed - human females were mating with Neanderthal males. However, the possibility of Neanderthal females mating with human males isn't entirely ruled out either, since there are plenty of possible explanations for that, too.

Neanderthals were very distincted from homo sapiens. They did not bury their dead like homo sapiens did and still do and neither did they wear jewellery like homo sapiens did and still do.
