Would you like to try and solve this visual puzzle/riddle?

Can you figure out what has occurred here?

Why are the footprints wet, while some of the immediate surrounding ground (of my tiny balcony) is not wet?

I of course have the answer (because my husband created the situation.) Just thought I'd make it into a mental puzzle for you guys.
Any guesses?

Clue: It has not rained. But there was a bucket involved.

I think I shouldn't tell you anything more yet, because I've seen you figure out things, and I don't want to give too much away. But this is not a typical, everyday situation.

Also, look at the direction of the water pattern. It is originating from inside our apartment. The sliding glass door to our living room is at the base/south end of these pictures.

His next plan: "I'm goona go out there at night with our crème brûlée flame torch and try and burn it off."
Me: "Oh really? That won't look suspicious to the people in the 19 floors above us at all."

  • My Guess,
Someone standing on the porch/patio sprayed something that acts as a water repellant. This substance fell to the floor and adhered to the floor but not where the shoes were.

Its almost as if someone was spraying water proofing on footwear and then later they tried to clean up their mess by throwing a bucket of water on the area
    OR
The water was throw out the sliding glass door for an unrelated reason but the waterproofing of the shoes caused this phenomenon

    • "Its almost as if someone was spraying water proofing on footwear and then later they tried to clean up their mess by throwing a bucket of water on the area" Oh, Mr. HornDog is... successful! Hip hip hooray! You've figured it out. He was not wearing the shoes at the time. He stood next to them, sprayed them, not knowing it would leave a perimeter around them. It discoloured the concrete into the shape of a pair of shoes. His brand new suede Vans (see Grond21's thread here. Did you read that before answering?) And yes, he tried to clean up his mess with a bucket. Which drew my attention, I saw it alllll... (It reminded me/us of the time he decided to spray paint some small terracotta pots, inside a cardboard box, but not seal it on the bottom properly, when using... navy blue paint. Even after I said, "Are you sure that's...) So we had some blue on our floor for a good while. Until we found some solvent.

    • No, I didn't read that before answering. I like to figure things out so I intentionally didn't look at anyone else's answer

  • I'm not exactly sure what this puzzle is.

But if I had to guess, I would say that the footprints are wet because the feet were there when the water was poured

    • The riddle is why are the footprints wet, but the immediate surrounding area is not. If feet were standing there, it would be the opposite. The footprints would be dry.

    • You don't mean wet versus dry, you mean water puddled versus water absent?

    • Sure. What you said. I guess that's more specific/accurate.

  • It has pointed shoes looking at the pic. A gnome kicked over the bucket trying to water your plants.

    • Oh god I love this. Thank you for the laugh!!

    • You're so welcome!

  • My guess, the asphalt was hardened with footprints in it. Then the bucket of water simply filled in the shoe shaped holes

  • Well! Once i bought this nano extra dry spray for my shoes and did similar test and I think we got the same puzzle 😂

  • Absorbent feet of an alien?

    • hahahaha

  • I'm confused what's the puzzle and why

    • I've described that those are footprints. How can footprints be wet/filled in with water, and the surrounding area be dry? Normally it would be the opposite.

    • I don't see no footprints just a little puddle going into a drain,

    • Maybe a puddle that was stood in, I got no idea to what this puzzle is you know
