You think France’s immediate surrender is why we see it as such a pussy country?

Brings up an interesting ethical issue. Is inspiring your people to fight to the death morally wrong?

Churchill didn't surrender and succeeded because he had the English Channel. Hitler didn’t surrender and more Germans died in the last 100 days than the first 2 years of WW2.

France was largely untouched, unlike Poland. And Frenchmen worked hardily for their Nazi paychecks. Then took revenge on the women who fucked around.

All the Frenchmen took Nazi cash building the Atlantic Wall.

  • Yes the collaborators horizontale were shamed by having their heads shaved. Good pic of that. There were reprisal killings and I expect horizontale punishments.

I am not going to cite sources but I have read the US wanted to treat France as a belligerent nation but Churchill persuaded the US against it.

Yet Churchill gave orders to shell the Vichy French fleet in harbor to destroy it when they wouldn't surrender or simply steam to the US for the duration.

Churchill also offered the French Cabinet union with Great Britain but they perniciously decided being a province of Germany was better than a dominion of the UK.

After Dunkirk about 50,000 evacuated French soldiers were repatriated and deployed against Germany. Only 3,000 joined Charles de Gaule. So it is questionable what the other 50,000 evacees did in the war.

So we could see France as being pusillanimous (you can contract at will).

The Blitzkreig won but it shouldn't have. German tanks were pretty crap. French and British tanks were SUPERIOR. A sole British tank went on a successful rampage against German tanks. It was the German tactic of massing their tanks that was superior and having radio in their tanks as well. British and French dispersed their tanks.

The US had expected more like 7 months resistance than 7 days and thought it would have fair warning.

There were more than 500,000 French men and women in the resistance against maybe 35,000 collaborators. So we can say the French people were betrayed by their pusillanimous government and military leaders.

Well beyond me to 'whatif' the French gov't had remained strong and traded space for time to hold out in Southern France. The US might have lend leased arms as they did for the British.

I short I think France was unfortunate to have a pussy gov't but the French people weren't.

  • France is not a pussy country per se, it's their leaders who tend to be. I think France tends to get a bad rep because of Parisian culture: full of affluent individuals who care a lot about status, looks, and their cliques, and because Parisian men are often somewhat soft and womanly. But outside of Paris I would say French people are more diverse than that.

But their leaders haven't always been the toughest. Case in point with Macron. He is your classic textbook case of a pretty boy president who clearly grew up with affluence and probably a fraternity of dudes he still maintains connections with. You can tell he's a weak man who is desperate to appear strong especially by trying to take on Russia. In the beginning when Putin was threatening to invade Ukraine, Macron was trying hard to dissuade him and jumped the gun saying "a deal was within reach." Which we all know never happened.

  • That and they literally have like 17 ways to say I surrender 😑 like dude

  • Hrrrm, you probably left out two thirds of that part of history, but oh well.

    • They did start a rival papacy. That was funny.

  • surrender? but they were strong n harsh to colony algeria etc .

  • Given the U. S. position on Russia-Ukraine, maybe Americans shouldn't be calling others "pussies".

  • I think it's a joke. The English were just as badly prepared as the french and they knew they didn't stand a chance so they just abandoned France and got their troops out. And now they're making fun of France for it? I think it's one of those things that just catches on and then it sticks around for ever even though there's not much substance behind it. It's like in sports getting labled a choker or a winner once people decide where you belong you're not getting out.

    • The French bailed on the British. What were we supposed to do? Stick around and get wiped out for someone else's country? Get real. They were lucky we sent anyone. Swiss hiding behind neutrality, situation normal.

  • Here's what I would say to that- would a "pussy country" fight for years in Vietnam and Algeria to maintain its colonial empire? Or bear the brunt of the fighting in the western front in WWI?

France surrendered in 1940 because it was badly outclassed militarily due to bad military leadership (looking at you, Maurice Gamelin). There was a resistance to Nazi occupation, let's not forget.

  • If you ever visit France you'll find in the Northern areas that there's a lot of World War 1 "preserved" battlefield museums. I've been to quite a few of them.

There are more cemeteries than I can count around the Somme.

France may not have taken much in the Second World War, but in the first it was badly scarred.

The leaders in 1939 had seen what happened when modern warfare hits. Population is displaced and decimated.

I'm not saying I think they did the right thing, but Paris is largely undamaged thanks to their surrender.

People are still maimed and killed every year on the Somme battlefields by buried shells fired over a century ago. The majority are French citizens.

And just like Americans need to remember most of their ancestry at the time of independence was British, the British started with a French invasion and conquest in 1066.

  • The French still remain the people with the most battle wins in the history of humankind. In WWII they were the victim of economic depression, lack of political leadership, military division, etc. in short, the French men wanted to fight, but their leaders dithered.

    • but in u. s. civil war Americans of north or south won every battle, so more than france. who surrendered fast.

    • @strateguy632 no. remember the alamo

  • Who is ''we''?

    What is ''pussy''?

Stereotyping and generalizing cannot explain an entire nation.

It takes several centuries to get where France is now. And that's certainly not a result of ''pussying'' :)

  • My father was a ww2 vet. He never talked about the war much but he used to say the French were the best allies that Hitler ever had.

  • i mean that's certrainly not the only incident of frances collossal failures in hostory...

  • They were a powerhouse right up until WWII. They never recovered from that.

  • Well France is a pretty small country and they was not really built or prepared for a World War. If they didn’t surrender right away all there beautiful building and landscapes would be gone. They just surrender to survive. Also I think Churchill was a better leader than who ever France had as there leader.

  • A lot of people are telling Ukraine to surrender and that countries aiding Ukraine are just hurting Ukraine.

    • We would rather have Ukraine fight Russia than fight them on our own soil, that part is true.

    • @otterman68 Pretty sure Ukraine is fighting based on their own decision. Having just revolted from Russian Puppet government and installed a democratic one. Deeply frayed as it is,

  • The Statue of Liberty should remind you of why France is not a pussy country.

  • I'm not exactly a Francophile but even I feel it's a little unfair to label the French as cowards. They fought as bravely as anyone in WW1 and would have again except that they lacked leadership. What would Britain have done without Churchill? Discuss.

  • The French are some of the most pragmatic people in the world. When faced with Hitler's onslaught, they knew full well that to resist simply meant extermination. Instead, they were smart enough to cooperate to some extent while also having a vigorous and deadly resistance against the Nazis that lasted for the entire war.

If you think The French are weaklings you should read a bit of History. The French are extremely tough people and throughout history have had a very brave and successful army. The French are not people that you want to get into a war with ever for any reason. They just simply were not prepared for the Nazis and they realized that.

The The characterization of the French as being pussies started only after Bush invaded Iraq and the French government and the French people declined to support this. In retrospect, the French were right and Bush was and is a horrid war criminal for invading Iraq with absolutely no reason.

    • I mean they survived a lot…but did they ever win…anything? Even napolean was beaten. Twice.

    • Actually they’ve won more wars than any other nation

    • @Tim2nice Wars or battles?

  • I think the french being cowards is more of a joke. Yugoslavia "surrendered" pretty quickly too but we dont get made fun of like the french.

I put surrendered in quotes because originally, theyugoslav government sided with the nazis, and got overthrown by the citizens almost immediately. Then the nazis invaded and occupied the country.

And then the shit show started.

"Better a war than a pact, Better the grave than a slave."

    • Amd its not morally wrong to inspire people to defend their homeland.

  • The immediate surrender was primarily due to 2 things. 1) minimal help from their allies who simply were not prepared for blitzkrieg, and 2) subpar weapons.

Historically, both before and after WWII, and even during, the French fielded a formidable military. Rommell commented on the Free French Forces in Africa, how they were a worthy opponent, even Hitler made note that he wished he had several battalions of fighting men like the French, that, apart from the Germans, they were the best soldiers in the world... which is why France was on his radar while Britain was considered nonconsequential...

Today the French Foreign Legion is one of the premier fighting forces in the world. Furthermore France is the only European nation, besides Russia, who has unilateral control of a nuclear arsenal.

They may have surrendered quickly in WWII, but today, to call them pussies would be a mistake

  • All of that is true, but the biggest reason no one likes the French is their arrogance. French people generally think far more highly of themselves than anyone else thinks of them.
