I've always been a "take charge" kind of guy, always taking a leadership role, but I wasn't always comfortable with the concept of being "dominant" - due to my very old-school upbringing.

My first outright clue was that - to my own shock and surprise - I threatened to spank a girl at a high school band party if she didn't stop poking me - which of course, she kept doing, which meant I had to follow through or lose all respect - so I did. But even that didn't "click" in my head. What finally cracked my mental barrier was running into an ex-girlfriend of a buddy, a couple of years after they'd broken up - he was a pathetic Nice Guy™ type and she was a Bad Girl who thought she'd try dating a nice guy for a change - and she started telling me why it didn't work out.

She admitted that she needed a strong, dominant guy because she knew she was difficult to deal with and needed someone to keep her in check and keep her from getting herself into too much trouble, and she was hoping that he would do that for her, but he was far too spineless. This revelation hit me like a 2x4 to the head - I'd never even considered that women would want that, because my upbringing never allowed for that possibility, and so much started to make sense for me. I kind of consider that my real transition to adulthood, and it certainly started me on my own path to embracing my own dominant nature, which I'd always been unable to accept before that.

I accepted being a dominant internally by my mid-20s, but didn't feel comfortable being open about it to friends until my late-20s, but since around 30, I've been open about it, and life's been better for it.
