Sex Between Two Singles Isn't a Christian Sin

I know. Mind blown, right?

Let me specify. Sex between a man and woman, neither are married or betrothed, they are not related, and she is not on her period, is not a Biblical sin. Going by the regular NIV or King James Bible (I don't know about the Catholic Holy Books.)

Sex Between Two Singles Isn't a Christian Sin

First. Important. The New Testament word, in English, for sexual sin is fornication. That's an English word that came about from escorts hanging out under arches. Same way we'd say seeing a hooker is bad--the Bible does not say "Hooker." Why is this important? Because the English word has one meaning, which has changed, and it is a stand in for greek Porneia, which means sexual sin. http://biblehub.com/greek/4202.htm

Sort of like how "felony" means a broad category of crimes today.

Why is this important? Because the Bible literally decided to be nice and list out sexual sins in the Old Testament. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus+20 God doesn't believe you should be wondering, or making up sins as you go.

“‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.

11 “‘If a man has sexual relations with his father’s wife, he has dishonored his father. Both the man and the woman are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

12 “‘If a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, both of them are to be put to death. What they have done is a perversion; their blood will be on their own heads.

13 “‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

14 “‘If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is wicked. Both he and they must be burned in the fire, so that no wickedness will be among you.

15 “‘If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he is to be put to death, and you must kill the animal.

16 “‘If a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it, kill both the woman and the animal. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

17 “‘If a man marries his sister, the daughter of either his father or his mother, and they have sexual relations, it is a disgrace. They are to be publicly removed from their people. He has dishonored his sister and will be held responsible.

18 “‘If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly period, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them are to be cut off from their people.

19 “‘Do not have sexual relations with the sister of either your mother or your father, for that would dishonor a close relative; both of you would be held responsible.

20 “‘If a man has sexual relations with his aunt, he has dishonored his uncle. They will be held responsible; they will die childless.

21 “‘If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonored his brother. They will be childless.

Think about it. If God made a detailed list of sexual sins, would a perfect God make an incomplete list? Would he leave off sins? No. That would defeat the point of a list. Is God an idiot, that he forgot sins?

"But unmarried sex is so obviously wrong, it was just understood!" Cries the pastor.

Right. That's why God had to mention sex with animals, sex with siblings, your father's wife, your aunt, all as sins? Because the Jews understood sex between unmarried singles was wrong, but they thought banging a donkey or a dog was fine? Ugh.

Sex Between Two Singles Isn't a Christian Sin

Oh, where does singles sex get mentioned? Exodus 22.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus+22

If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife.17 If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.

And yes, if you sleep with a betrothed woman, that's adultery. That's also touched on elsewhere. But importantly--see how there's a bride price for virgins? That means there are non virgin brides. That's just logic. Because if there was one bride price, there would not specifically be a virgin bride price.

"But in the Old Testament, there was no word for women not virgins!" The Pastor cries. "That's why in some translations it says maid! It can mean young woman, virgin, or female servant!"

Let's check that.

1. If this passage means just "young woman" instead of a virgin, then lots of young women were married. Can you pay a virgin bride price and marry another man's wife? No, that's adultery.

2. If the "maid" translations mean female servant as they do in some contexts, what sense does that mean? You can sleep with any woman, but if you sleep with a female servant, a maid, you must offer to marry her or pay bride price? Class protection against the working class? LOL no.

3. Only "virgin" makes sense, as it specifically talks about betrothal, and virgin bride prices.

Sorry Pastor. Your words ring false here.

Sex Between Two Singles Isn't a Christian Sin

Oh and another...

Deuteronomy 22.

If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity....If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house.

Note here, this man was defrauded, and the woman falsely claimed virginity, and the crime was specifically "being promiscuous while still in her father's house."

Note that we know virgins had a higher bride price, meaning there were obviously marriages where the man knew she was not a virgin. The woman had had sex, lied about it, and the man had thought he was marrying a virgin.

As for the verse, It's not "for having sex outside of marriage." Note that when a man seduces a virgin who is not promised, there's no flogging involved. It's only if he seduces a virgin, he must pay the bride price she would have gotten. If unmarried sex was a sin, why would this passage specify "while still in her father's house"? God himself dictated every word in the Scriptures, no?

"But Paul!" You cry. Yes, he did mention sexual sins. 1 Corinthians 5. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+5

"It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud!"

And guess what... that is a sexual sin on the list.

Another time Paul talks about sex sins... " The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?"

That's the part Pastors love to quote. Then Paul goes on and pastors ignore... "Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[b] 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[c]"

Yes. Sex with prostitutes is a sin. And yes, when the Bible says prostitutes or whores, it actually means it. Some people want to go "But isn't a girl who sleeps around a whore?" Well, sorry. The Bible either means what it says, or it doesn't. You don't get to fill in your own meanings.

Lastly, some cling to Proverbs 5:15. http://biblehub.com/proverbs/5-15.htm

Drink water from your own well--share your love only with your wife.

For one, that can pretty easily be read to mean "Don't sleep with other men's wives. Sleep with YOUR wife. " And hence, unmarried sex is a sin. But also, think about it... Proverbs was mostly written by King Solomon, who also recorded a few other people. http://www.biblestudy.org/basicart/book-of-proverbs-overview.html

Do you think God would lay out the law in amazing detail, even detailing if a man sleeps with a virgin... and give The Law to Moses, but forget to mention a sin until hundreds of years later when King Solomon came around? Is God an idiot? Are the Scriptures a lie?

Sex Between Two Singles Isn't a Christian Sin

http://biblehub.com/psalms/19-7.htm

The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

So here's the challenge if you disagree... prove me wrong. No, I am not saying it's great to have lots of unmarried sex. In a perfect world, we'd all find our loves and marry young and spend our lives together. But, not so.

However, just because you think something is a sin, or the English decided something is a sin, does not make it a Biblical sin. It's same as just because the Bible never condemns polygamy--King Saul, King David, and King Solomon all had many wives and God never said a word, while punishing for them for other sins--would we want polygamy in the West? Hell no. However, why should people carry around high guilt for something that is not actually a Biblical sin? That can lead to a lot of issues around sex, even when married later.

  • Wrong, wrong, wrong.

1 Corinthians 7 clearly states just that. If you cannot contain GET MARRIED! Don't mix up NIV with KJV.

The word for premarital sex is FORNICATION:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fornication

    for·ni·ca·tion
    ˌfôrnəˈkāSH (ə) n/
    noun forma lhumorous
sexual intercourse between people not married to each other.
    "laws forbidding adultery and fornication"
synonyms: extramarital sex, extramarital relations, adultery, infidelity, unfaithfulness, cuckoldry; premarital sex; informalhanky-panky

    www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fornication

As a Christian we do not follow the old testament as we are not under the law. The old testament also states that a woman who is a virgin and had sex with somebody unmarried is a HARLOT. With more than one, she is a whore. A man who do is a WHORE-MONGER. If caught and wasn't shown to be rape, both will be stoned to death. That is why when Jesus walked the earth and met with Mary Magdalene they wanted to stone her for it. That is where he says about he who isn't without sin, cast the first stone. They couldn't do it. Not because they were sinners, but mainly because many of those same men had sex with her as well. Plus, remember that we are to follow the laws of the land we live on. You still had to be legally married by somebody who can wed you. Marriage in those times were with young women between the age of puberty till normally 19, which is considered youth. 20+ you can still get married, but you would be an old maid, for women. And they had young marriages. Remember that they were NOT considered children. They were young men and women with minds of adults. They didn't delay adulthood. We today do, and increase age ideal for marriage, while decreasing the age to have sex. This was designed to screw you up. This is why God's way is better. But the world doesn't think like this. And why many young generations are fleeing from the faith because they don't want to feel bound.

If premarital sex was so right, then we wouldn't be having broken families, broken relationships, hearts, selfish motives, divorce, rage driven to murder and kill unfaithful lovers, get sent to the psyche ward because of obsession and clinginess due to painful experiences, STDs, miscarriages, death, abortion, poor sex lives, etc. This would not happen. Everybody would be happy, but it doesn't work that way. But God did give us free will to chose. All we can do is inform. The choice is left up to them.

    • The English word is fornication. However thats a translation of the greek word porneia, which means illicit sex. Paul also uses it both for a man sleeping with his fathers wife and about prositution. And the law may or may not apply, but aren't the sexual sins listed in the law still sins? Is homosexuality or bestiality now alright?

    • See fornication has its own meanings today, but it does not thoroughly match the original word, which was a broad category of sexual sins listed in the law.

    • No. It's not already. Bestiality is both wicked and evil. He did made us to be with man or a woman depending on the sex you were born with. Animals are with their own species. Male and female. Here is proof of his word according to Romans 1:18-24 KJV: 18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

  • Honestly, it's even more simplified than that. You have to break down which parts of the Old Testament were cultural and what were considered deep truths that can be applied today as well. Because The New Covenant is the one in which we live under. A Covenant or Testament is a contract. The New Contract/ New Testament is the one that is valid here.

Paying the bride price was a cultural issue of the time, because of the implications that came with it. The same way it was said to not eat unclean foods (health reasons), to not get tattoos (branding that represented a tribe you were a part of), a woman not to wear a mans dress (men and women both wore dresses, which were particular to their gender). Certain things are cultural. Having sex with a virgin woman today who is not betrothed doesn't mean you owe her father one lamb lol.

Same goes for modesty. What's modest is changing with the culture of which you are in. It has to do with your intentions and not with the actual clothes (tho that is a small part). If a woman is dressing to catch herself a husband, then she's already doing it for the wrong reasons and that is going against the recommendation of modesty. Yes, I said recommendation and not a commandment. There are verses in the bible that say you "should" do these things for various reasons and choosing to not do those things does not equate to sin.

A woman wearing pants today is not a sin, because in the Old testament it was recommended for women not to wear mens dress.

What Girls & Guys Said

  • Interesting thanks for sharing.

  • you are mostly correct but the seed of deception is planted. if you have sex with a woman you're married. but then if you get rid of her and marry another girl that's the same as divorce and remarriage- and jesus said that's adultery. so single sex technically is not a sin as long as you stay married after you have sex. if you're going around sleeping with women you're doing a LOT of adultery! which is a pretty big sin. unless you want to have a lot of wives because there's nothing unbiblical about having more than one wife. but then you have to take care of them all! so don't get a big head.

    • If the bible teaches sex with a virgin makes you married, why does it say a man who seduces a virgin must marry her unless the father objects? They would already be married. You can't marry someone you already married, and dad can't prevent a marriage that already happened.

    • that is semantics. 'he must marry her' is a requirement from God because in God's eyes you slept together so that makes you married. to then not take her as a wife would be a divorce. the provision that a father can refuse to give his daughter comes from the law that says a husband or father can nullify the vow a woman makes. but if it is a holy vow then the husband or father is guilty of it. so if a girl makes a foolish 'vow' by sleeping with an unworthy man her father can nullify it. but if the man be worthy, and the father nullifies it, then the father would be guilty of breaking the vow. but if the father doesn't nullify the marriage, from that moment onward then the woman becomes the husband's responsibility. don't try to play lawyer and justify your sexual sin. just admit that you're weak and a sinner and ask forgiveness and GET MARRIED.

    • Then tell me, where does the Bible teach that sex is marriage, and they are not two separate things?

    • Show All
  • When you have sex with someone your souls unite. Marriage and sex are symbolic of the unity a Christian has with God. When you have sex with more than one person your soul is attached to each and every one of them. Which explains the mental and emotional issues people who are highly promiscuous tend to have. When you have premarital sex and sex outside of your marriage you're polluting your covenant with God.

    • So the bible does specify that pre maritial sex is a sin?

    • There is no specific prohibition in the Bible against sex between an unmarried man and unmarried woman. However, "sexual immorality" is denounced in about 25 passages in the New Testament. The word translated as "sexual immorality" or "fornication" in English versions of the Bible is the Greek word porneia, which means "illicit sexual intercourse."

    • Show All
  • Be careful about your feelings, they can deceive you.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. The entire New Testament is provably fraudulent, and several books of the Old Testament are also fraudulent.

I worked out that natural law contains no "commandment" against premarital sex, an observation I should have made a very long time ago, and I'd have been much better off socially.

Also, though the 10th commandment does say, among other things, "thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife," it does not say, "thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's daughter".

So you can't derive a rational law from nature against premarital sex.

However, people should keep marriage vows once they are given.

This basically means I lived my whole life waiting for some "right woman" which probably doesn't exist, while everyone else started having sex with whoever they felt like it from an early age. So now women don't want anything to do with me because of the fact I am a virgin.

But you are actually wrong, OP, the Christian church, and the Jews, have taught that premarital sex is wrong for as long as commentary has been written on the subject. They are probably wrong about this, because again, there is no way to derive this, "Thou shalt not have premarital sex," commandment from nature. Unless you've literally had a personal, divine revelation not to do it, there is no way to know that, and even if you had such a revelation you should probably question whether it was really from the real God.

After all, if God opposed premarital sex, then he should have punished it publicly by now, instead of letting people "deceive themselves" and one another, etc.

So the fact that God never punishes it must mean that he doesn't care very much about the subject.

However, I must point out that the word "Fornication", comes from the words "porneo" and "pornia", specifically means "harlotry", but is used generally of all "illicit sex", according to Strong's Concordance.

however, since I can easily prove, from a quote from the Torah prophet, Baalam, that every last one of the New Testament books is false, you shouldn't worry about the issue too much anyway.

    • Just to let you know, Jesus said that if a man looks at a woman and lusts he is guilty of adultery, and he also said that if a man marries a divorced woman he is guilty of adultery. I used to try to live to that standard, and it is completely maddening and impossible. Besides all that, "christian" women sure as hell don't hold themselves to an equal standard, though they hypocritically do hold men to that standard.

    • 1. Single people can't commit adultery... 2. Its been taught, but were they right?

  • sex outside of marriage to God is fornication therefore it is a sin. God does not like it nor agrees with fornication. Period. People always try to spin God's word one way or another to appease to their lifestyle so they don't feel like they are doing wrong. It's just another way to look the other way instead of admitting your failures and faults. There's a reason why Jesus was sent people, there's also a reason why Jesus forgave the harlot and told her to not sin anymore... you CAN NOT be a Christian and WILLFULLY sin.. sorry it doesn't work that as much as you want it to.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11King James Version (KJV)

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither FORNICATORS, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

  • This is what comes from translating a Hebrew text into Greek into English, over thousands of years. If you try and follow it literally, you find you cannot, because nobody knows what the first ever Bible literally meant.

  • I'ma let you finish, but I did not read a single word you posted. That being said, it should be taken into account that if you study the patristics, literally every single early saint and Christian theologian interpreted the New Testament condemnations of fornication as applying to premarital sex as well. Consider that these were scholars who lived during antiquity where Greek was their first language and many of whom even personally knew the disciples and/or people who had known them.

    • ... you couldn't have linked to any of these numerous folks you speak of?

    • Read the Ante Nicene Fathers and then the Nicene & Post Nicene Fathers. Justin Martyr, the Didache, Tertullian etc. Then get into the geniuses like Ss. John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian. Along with Ss. Athanasius the Great, Ambrose of Milan, Jerome, and Augustine of Hippo. The point being that none - absolutely none - of them whatsoever would have ever interpreted the biblical texts as not condemning premarital sex. And they were native Greek speakers who lived in the Eastern Roman Empire where Greek was the lingua franca, and therefore would have been more knowledgable about it than us.

    • From St. Ambrose of Milan: "No one is permitted to know a woman other than his wife. The marital right is given you for this reason: lest you fall into the snare and sin with a strange woman. 'If you are bound to a wife do not seek a divorce'; for you are not permitted, while your wife lives, to marry another." From St. Jerome: "Earthly laws give a free rein to the unchastity of men, merely condemning seduction and adultery; lust is allowed to range unrestrained among brothels and slave girls, as if the guilt were constituted by the rank of the person assailed and not by the purpose of the assailant. But with us Christians what is unlawful for women is equally unlawful for men, and as both serve the same God both are bound by the same obligations." Note when he says "as if the guilt were constituted by the rank of the person assailed and not by the purpose of the assailant." That pretty much debunks your hypothesis.

It is clear that your understanding of the Bible is not as great as you think it is.
Look up what the words 'fornication' and 'fornicators' mean, then go to an on-line Bible and search for where those words appear in the New Testament.
Fornicators means those who are not single and have sex outside of marriage. The Bible states clearly that they are damned to Hell.

    • Read the mytake and educate yourself.

    • I love the way that self-righteous lefties say 'educate yourself'. It is one of their distinguishing phrases. It is pompous, it is arrogant and it shows their self-perceived superiority, when, in reality, all that they have done is drink the leftist Kool-Aid. No matter how many Jew lawyer word games you want to play, the fact will remain that in the original languages of the New Testament the word that was translated as 'fornication' in the King James version of the Bible refers to people who have sex outside of marriage.

    • You begin your comment snidely saying i don't understand as well as i think but I'm the arrogant one? Here. The KJV fornication is a translation for porneia, which means illicit sex. It's not the same word jesus used for adultery. Paul used it in referance to sex with prostitutes, and a man having sex with his father's wife.
