Why do some men prefer tomboys?

Tomboys don't whine and complain if they get dirty, are hot, and don't have to "look perfect" every moment. They tend to enjoy doing things outdoors, and are often into sports (including watching sports on TV). A lot of guys are going to find those things attractive.

I tend to like more of a mix between a girly girl and a tomboy.

I don't know, to each their own. People like who they like. Sometimes one might not even be able to answer why they like who/what they like.
Personally, I appreciate beauty, cuteness, sexiness, whatever adjective might be used. Regardless of what one wears/how they're packaged.

Beyond that, tomboys are more "manly" than women and it's easier to act like a man around them. We all, men and women, put on acts big or small to present ourselves to other people, from what you say your interests are to what clothes you wear. A woman that doesn't have feminine taste gets rid of much of the complications surrounding how to feel comfortable around them. We can be a little bit more real.
