Just on special occasions bud... as well as after deadly graveyard shifts when the charge nurse is PMSing, heading out with a several colleagues to talk about the crazy incidents that happened that day is needed. Such as arguing that we need to be trained in martial arts for incidents like being startled with a patient wanting to stab you with a butter knife when it's time to change his IV drip. Yes... it's happened.

On a serious note though, hospital security training needs to be updated for better qualified training in the safety of patients and health care workers. Violently serious incidents don't happen too often... but when it does, crap escalates fast, especially in ER.

I’m currently in school majoring in criminology and criminal justice at the undergraduate level (bachelor’s). I’m thinking going to graduate school and getting a master’s but I’m still on the road on that idea. Once I graduate I’m going to go into the police academy to begin qualification and get certified as a law enforcement officer. If I managed to apply and get hired by a police agency before academy training, I’ll work right away once I’m done with training. If I haven’t applied yet, I would have to apply to an agency once I finish training. Some agencies will sponsor you through the academy if you managed to get hired by them. Meaning, they’ll pay for all tuition and academy expenses. Some agencies even have a tuition reimbursement program their employees

Once you start on an agency, every rookie goes through what is called the “Field training program,” where an FTO (field training officer) rides along with them for about a year, teaching the rookie department policies and application of what you learned at the academy for the area you’ll be working in.

If I may ask, did you finish all your schooling before going into nursing? It’s pretty amazing to be working as a nurse at your age. Usually persons your age are still in school. How’d you do it?

Haha so in a nutshell, I applied into the nursing program straight from high school. Was done with the program last April and earned my BScN in May. I had been studying for the NCLEX (registration testing) way before graduation from simply studying off old tests to get a feel of the questions that would be asked. I was prepared to give it a go upon the earliest date I was able to do the testing after graduating. I had been working as a nursing assistant at the hospital where I was placed for co-op training during my second year of school as my mentor there developed a liking towards me. I then landed a position working in post operative care once my RN certification was released and I was oficially part of the College of Nursing by mid August. It all fell into place 🙂 So I have been in post-op since September, but don't like it as it isn't originally the position I see myself working at.

I'm sorry to hear that. I tend to stick with a group of friends that push me to be a better version of myself. I actually know of a several who are much more successful than I am, though they come from more well off families with business ties. I've got a friend who is slightly older but our age as well who's also a nurse and works in ICU, she also works as a TA to teach about health ethics and critical care... and is able to balance a better social life than I do 😥 Honestly, hang around people you aspire to be who have the same work ethics as you do, and you'll care to push yourself harder 🙂
