  • Most healthy men often wake up in the morning with an erection. "Morning wood" and "Morning tent" are slang terms for this. Men have several erections a night as part of their sleep cycle. Many times they wake up and find they are still erect.

An erection is caused by a rush of blood to the penis. A man's penis -- especially that of a young man -- can also become erect without any kind of arousing stimulation; this is known as "spontaneous erection."

Many times it has to do with what you are dreaming about -- young males can be aroused in their sleep and have a nocturnal emission (wet dream).

Morning erections are technically night time erections which happen during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep (when most dreaming occurs), although men older than sixty years may have them during even non-REM sleep. Generally, males experience four intervals of REM sleep per night. These spontaneous erections are caused by specific neuro-reflexes that are stimulated during REM sleep. Morning erections are the tail end of a series of night time erections, as many as five per night that can last for 20-30 minutes each.

Many people are not aware of the fact that erections do not just serve sexual purposes; they also are a source of increased blood supply to the penis, so the male body will have several erections at night, just to keep the penis healthy.

Waking usually occurs after a session of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Just about everyone gets an erection during REM sleep, while you're dreaming. That's why you often wake up from a dream, with a hard-on.

Men waking up with an erection is a common occurence, but it is not something that really has to do with waking up at all.

All males, regardless of age, get erections several times during the night during REM sleep. In the beginning you cycle through the stages fairly rapidly about every 90 minutes, but as your body rests you spend less time in the more restful stages of sleep and more time in REM sleep. This means that after 7 or 8 hours of sleeping, a large part of your time is in REM sleep and thus you are likely to wake up with an erection.

    • CONCLUSION: its basically the bodies way of keeping the penis healthy. keep it working. nothing more than that.

    • but I always feel horniest in the morning, more so than any other part of the day. it would just be an awkward time to get a shag in, either half a sleep or time to get to work. that's me being honest.

    • thanks for your answer

  • There are multiple theories on this. Some suggest it's because the man's testosterone level is highest in the morning, other times it's suggested during sleep most of the blood travels to the body's middle point, but most evidence now suggest the bladder provides pressure on certain nerves. During the day, men are focused on other tasks, which makes us able to suppress those impulses. During the night our mind is at rest, so then it happens.

Saying it happens in the morning is a bit off though. Men get erections 4-5 times a night during and shortly after the REM-fase, so at the same time as dreaming.

So if a guy wakes up shortly after a dream, he'll have morning wood.

Also important to remember is that if a guy has an erection at night, it doesn't automatically mean he had a sexual dream.

    • Yeah I like to stay "on guard" while sleeping. It works better then sleeping with one eye open. =P

  • Men are biologically able to get/have an erection most often/easily during the morning because the hormone that is released into the bloodstream that causes erections is at its greatest during this time. It is steadily released, although slowly, while a man sleeps, so when he wakes up, or just before, he has a large amount of the hormone in his bloodstream. Therefore, the cause of frequent morning wood.

  • That is a mystery really, many guesses, studies show that 70% of the time while a man sleep, he's hard.

  • That may be part of it - and depending onw what you're dreaming about.

  • So we don't roll out of bed while we are sleeping... It's like a kick stand. =P

  • It has to do with the parasympathetic nervous system (which is basically the body in rest). Like digestion and urination, erections are brought forward by the parasympathicus. That is why during sports the penis becomes flaccid and 'shrinks', because the body is in sympathicus.

  • This actuallly happens 3-4 times per night while sleeping and guys don't even notice it. It has to do with making sure the penis is getting proper blood flow and oxygen. It's completely normal, no it doesn't mean your boyfriend is thinking about sex.
