Apparently you can get arrested for calling a girl a cunt multiple times... for real?

This girl at my uni was being rude to me and I ended up calling her a cunt multiple times. Campus police was called and the cop told me she could arrest me for simple assault and disorderly conduct. For what... calling a girl a cunt? And the officer explained the girl was "afraid" of me after that so that was grounds for an arrest. But I never threatened her nor was physically aggressive. I wasn't even verbally suggesting harm. So what grounds does she have to arrest me?

  • On the assault part, I suspect any good lawyer would get you off that, because it sounds like it's really stretching it.

Disorderly conduct is probably one of those laws that are so loosely defined that it can mean just about anything. The wording on some laws can be paraphrased "If the cop thought you were violating the law then you were." In other words it's totally a judgement call on something very loosely defined.

In the case of this girl, you don't really have to directly threaten her. If she feels threatened by your actions or words, then she may be able to press charges. It doesn't mean you'll get convicted, but she could press charges.

If you were doing this repeatedly when you saw her, she was taking action to get you to stop doing something you know you shouldn't have been doing. You knew better and you did it anyway.

  • Assault is making a threat to commit violence to a person, coupled with the apparent present ability to commit such violence. Either the constable was overstepping her bounds or there is more to the story than you have told us.

    • I just passed by her multiple times calling her bitch and cunt. Never did I suggest any threat of physical harm. To me, this is just over-policing.

    • Perhaps she was just trying to scare you into standing down, but it is a heavy-handed tactic.

    • Police involvement for calling someone names, even if it was repetitive, should never be grounds for police involvement unless there was a threat of physical harm.

  • Don't act like an overly aggressive child next time. That is considered a verbal threat and harassment, how are you in university and you didn't know this? Learn to control your temper next time. One time a crazed "pro-life" protester at my school screamed and swore at my friend, and he had her arrested for harassment and verbal threats of violence. You need to grow up and learn some self-control if you are going to university because next time they may just kick you out of school. The girl my friend got arrested was kicked out of school because she couldn't act like an adult either! Next time be a big boy and walk away because what is more important to you winning some petty argument or getting your degree?

  • Can they get your for verbal assault and harassment? Its campus police, I think they operate a little differently than normal police. In any case, do you just like walk by her and whisper 'bitch cunt' in her ear or something? That's weird. You should prob just stop that.

    • No, I walk by and openly call her a cunt.

  • I hate that word, but it's stupid that she actually got you arrested over it. I've been called worse, and I just move on with my day.

  • Wait. So every time you went by this girl you called her a bitch or cunt and you don't see that as inappropriate?

    • It is not something that needs any law enforcement involvement.

    • Uhhhhh that's kind of harassment dude. You don't do that to people.

  • GOOD.

i wish there was a way that word would just get omitted from use forever. disgusting word. i hate it so much.

  • Calling a girl a cent multiple times, you must have been angry. It's not that you called her a cunt would they have arrested you, but your conduct behind it. I would assume

    • And just so you know, there's a "code of conduct" for everything and everywhere. For example, how you act at home is different than school. And how you act at school is different than church. And how you act at church is different than the park. There's certain behaviors for everywhere you go.

    • Cunt not cent

  • I'm not surprised, it's college, that's like heaven for women.

  • You were probably very verbally aggressive to the point you were "disturbing the peace" so you could very well be arrested for disorderly conduct.

  • I think uni rules vary upon each school. At the very least the officer could have got you for disorderly conduct.

    • This is disorderly conduct (a) A person commits an offense who, in a public place and with intent to cause public annoyance or alarm: (1) Engages in fighting or in violent or threatening behavior; (2) Refuses to obey an official order to disperse issued to maintain public safety in dangerous proximity to a fire, hazard or other emergency; or (3) Creates a hazardous or physically offensive condition by any act that serves no legitimate purpose. (b) A person also violates this section who makes unreasonable noise that prevents others from carrying on lawful activities. (c) A violation of this section is a Class C misdemeanor.

    • You don't think this situation fits number 3?

    • No because I was not creating a physically offensive environment... Plus, why does calling someone a name need police involvement?

    • Show All
  • she probably felt threatened. And also why didn't you walk away?

  • The officer sounds like a cunt.

    • Even though the officer was a cunt, and trying to intimidate you... Legally you'd have to threaten the person. So if you were like you dumb cunt I'm going to beat your ass, then there would be ground for verbal assault and the potential for a restraining order if you repeated a few times. But like I said the officer was being a bully and is a total cunt.

  • Well, she was threatened and it is ABUSE. Also it is never okay to call a girl a cunt... unless in the bedroom.

    • and she's ok with it

  • That's stupid.

  • That is absurd. I can't believe this actually happened.

    • What? Me calling her the c word or the officer's response to that?

    • Of course the officers response. I think you are trolling.

    • No I swear. I am just as shocked as you are.

  • Yes... many campuses and municipalities have the fairly unknown "15 Cunt" Law where if an individual calls any other person "cunt" more than 15 times, it's punishable by law. Many feel this violates freedom of speech.

  • that's incredible

  • Christ, where are you , in america? I love Ireland, Cunt is so not a forbidden word.. Gee might be... Australia and Briton seem to be no so sensitive to it as well

  • Society.

  • She obviously lied to them then. If you can be arrested for being rude to someone who is being rude just cause they are female, that's fucked up.

  • You don't listen so good, do you?

  • Assault and disorderly conduct? No. But slander and violating her integrity along with threatening behavior etc? Yes.

Insulting anyone to excess can be criminal. Including whatever she did to provoke you to that degree.

  • Nah the officer was being a gay cunt. Freedom of speech lol

In Australia this word is used religiously. It's so cringe when Americans use it.

  • Maybe it comes as a shock, but yeah, you can't verbally abuse/harass someone again and again without consequence.
