  • NOTHING in this world is free, nor should it be. Condoms, like anything else, cost money to make. Latex comes from rubber trees, which have to be grown, tended to, and tapped by people who make pennies a day. The raw materials have to be transported around the world. The rubber refined into a liquid latex formula that's appropriate for condoms, which is done in expensive factories using heat and chemicals. Then more machines that turn the raw materials into condoms. More machines use different materials from different parts of the world to package the condoms.

Workers have to be paid to run these machines and maintain them, the factory itself has to be paid for and maintained, and electrical bills, chemical disposal, insurance, and all kinds of other expenses have to be covered. People have jobs designing the packaging and the condoms themselves, testing them, marketing them, and shipping them. Truck drivers bring them to stores. All of that has to be paid for, plus turn a profit.

Or, maybe you mean that taxpayers should pay for them. That's also BS. These are YOUR (you and the guy you are with) expenses, and you (two) should pay for them, just like all of your other expenses in life. Condoms aren't exactly a massive expense either - you can buy a gross of them (144) for less than $40, or roughly what you'd pay for a meal for two at a low-cost restaurant.

I don't want ANYTHING to be "free" (nothing is ever truly free anyway), because that's how things get abused. If you have to pay for your own stuff, you're more likely to be conscious about waste and efficient about what you buy, and that's better for the whole planet, including for you.

  • You can get free condoms in the UK.

    if you are under 25.

The counselling centre I worked at also get out sexual health information and we had grab bags of 3 condoms and a sex health leaflet on front desk.

as the centre did counselling and other stuff for 12 to 25, then those attending or simply walking in could take a pack.

if they let us know before hand we would sort more.

For example 4 lads were going to Ibiza on holiday and their mum suggested they pop to the centre. We gave them 5 x packs of 3 each for their holiday.

    • Where people are saying they should not be free as these things cost money. This needs offset against the cost of treating the likes of Chlamydia, HIV and other STD’s. It also needs to be off set against the costs for say a girl of 16- 18 getting pregnant, the cost of childcare, maybe even cost to the care system of another child in the system. In the UK, there are a number of regional and National schemes, the C Card scheme is a good example of it. It is open to 13 - 24 year olds and provides free condoms, Dams, lube, also Chlamydia tests. Yeah okay under 16’s should not be having sex, etc, however they do, so need to have access to condoms, sexual health support the same as anyone else (more so really). Free condoms etc, help combat the spread of STD’s and unplanned / unwanted pregnancies. Yeah okay if you have the cash pay for them, however not many 16 yr olds have the cash to keep up with the sex.

  • Nothing is ever free unless you can convince people to donate the supplies, the equipment to make them, and the labor to make them. There is always a cost. Maybe we need a condom for humanity organization (like habitat for humanity) that does that.

Otherwise yes they should be free but not paid for by taxes of any type. Find another way to make them free that doesn't use tax money.

They are pretty cheap though, a box of 20 was only like 8 dollars last time I bought one for a guy.

  • Who's going to pay for them? You expect the government or your health insurance to pay? There are responsibilities with having sex, and that means paying for everything involved. Or do you want someone else to pay for your toiletries for clean up too? Or your laundry soap?

  • They often are if you go to a clinic. Otherwise, yes I do. Cost of condom vs cost of unplanned and unprepared pregnancy for someone who can’t afford to care for a child?

    No brainer.

  • most guys rather cum in your mouth so who needs condoms

  • So you are saying that people get pregnant because they don't have money to use condoms? That is bullshit. People get pregnant because they don't like to use condoms nor don't have enough knowledge.

  • They're free in the uk but they could do with being more easily and discreetly available. Free dispensers in toilets would be a good start.

  • All birth control should be

    • @snakeboop exactly, it’s an area that people really miss the point on.

  • They are free at any planned parenthood

  • Are you asking if condoms should grow on trees or if tax payers should pay for the supply of condoms?

  • Well I'm going to take your question and I'm kind of going to a smart-ass about it I think the yes one day they would have been free because we need population control we're running out of all kinds of things on this planet now my smart-ass remark would be we all just got free condoms by getting the virus shot because I think eventually one day we will find out that it will make women sterile Within 2 to maybe 5 years we will find this out probably I hope that I am one hundred percent wrong but sorry I had to say it

  • Manufacturing is not free

    • To the point!

  • Yeah they should be like any birth control. I’m glad I live in the UK.

  • Yes. It would reduce the chances of unwanted pregnancies and STDs

  • Yes.

  • They basically are. I got a hundred pack on Amazon for like $20

  • You can always contact condom companies, maybe they will give you free defective condoms out of the kindness of their hearts.

  • Yes, and the other contraceptives as well.

  • A lot of the basic ones are.

  • Free condoms are available everywhere in the UK for people under 25.

    • @donkeydan I think there are only a few countries that do this. It’s had a really big impact on teen pregnancies. The actual cost for making them free is really small. It’s far less than the costs required for a new teen mum.

    • @ChrisMaster69 Yes they really don't cost a lot bought in bulk. I don't see why more countries don't do this.

    • @donkeydan I used to do the car run to pick them up. I would have at least 50 boxes of them, I think about 140 - 150 per box… Also a 100 or so lubes A number of boxes of Dams etc. Not usually an issues unless I went to work before going to the centre. Having the guards at the vehicle check point searching your car and finding shit loads of condoms etc was always funny. Admittedly I also did a similar thing on the Squadron, I was in charge of the Condoms for detachments etc. If we ever went through air port security it was funny explaining why you had a bag with 200 plus condoms.

  • Last I looked it cost money to make condoms and believe it or not workers have to be paid, who’s going to do that, the tooth fairy?

  • Yes, all birth control should.

  • They are, in most universities.

But free is free for a reason. The quality is usually shit.
