Not all erections are sexual. They can happen just randomly when you don't feel horny at all or when you wake up. Your penis just gets hard for a little while and then it goes away.
Physically, you just feel a tightness and firmness in that area. You feel it press up against your clothes. You can also feel the weight of it when you stand up. Just having an erection is neither pleasurable or painful in itself. It's just there.
I think the urge to have sex usually leads to an erection way more often than the other way around.

Probably the same way an erection feels for a woman. When a female is aroused the clitoris engorges and becomes erect, the same as a penis does. So if you know what that feels like I'm certain it's the same.
