When was the last time you experienced Schadenfreude?

Masochism is when you derive pleasure from having pain inflicted upon you.

Sadism is when you derive pleasure from inflicting pain upon others.

But what is "Schadenfreude"?

This post is a direct result of a pink Anon posting this question... "Is it weird to get turned on by rape?"

Here is what she said in the body of her post...

"When I was young (11) I liked to watch movies about pregnant women in tough and life threatening situations. Then it developed into liking rape scenes, then abuse and even incest but specifically a man's violence towards a woman.

I have no idea what the root of this is. I was assaulted but it has no correlation to my preference and happened before I figured out why I like specific scenes so much. I didn't enjoy what happened to me which leads me to believe I wouldn't actually enjoy rape. But I can't help but fantasize. Something about dominance, male strength, taking something and being a woman who is defeated and forced. Whenever there are rape scenes my stomach gets odd feeling almost like butterflies but with an urge.

I know rape fantasy is semi normal but I have had an sexual obsession with male violence towards women from a very young age and want to find out why"

"Schadenfreude" is when you derive pleasure from seeing someone else in pain that you did not directly inflict yourself but was either self-inflicted by the person in pain or inflicted on them by a third party (someone other than yourself).

Shadenfreude translates from German as ‘harm-joy’, is the strange pleasure that we experience in response to another person’s misfortune.

  • Schadenfreude is also used in not so harsh situations
Like my last time was, when a work colleague, who is picking on me for months now for no fucking reason, went behind my back to my employer to talk shit about me and demanded a meeting with me and he basically put her in her place, cause there was no reason for her to put me down like she did. I felt Schadenfreude right there haha

    • I'm sorry that happened to you :(

    • Thaanks, she is on vacation and I have my peace for now lol

  • I laugh when I watch videos of people like falling down and stuff

    • Yes, some others said the same, like funniest videos :)

    • @kataylor @laurieluvsit I had pleasure or "Schadenfreude" from watching cfnm, of course, until I had to go participate in it.

    • @Mikeybear What is that?

  • Schadenfreude isn't really the best description of what that girl was talking about - she's much more about being dominated and "forced" to do kinky sexual things, because then she wouldn't have to feel guilty for doing those things because it wasn't her choice to do them. She wants to be kinky but her moral programming tells her that being kinky is sinful, making her feel guilt for wanting it, so domination and even "rape fantasies" are essentially a "loophole" that exempts her from that guilt. That's actually quite common.

But she's not experiencing JOY from seeing women being assaulted, she's experiencing AROUSAL. That's quite different.

Schadenfreude is perfectly captured by us laughing at the coyote's failures with the roadrunner, though.

    • I think your explanation is accurate, MrOracle, at least as the reason why women fantasize about rape and read bodice ripper novels. They can imagine doing, what they would consider to be, unspeakable and degrading things, without guilt. But the anon asker talked about the thrill of watching movie scenes. I don't recall her saying that she fantasized. However, I would suspect that the sensation she gets from watching such scenes is based on a desire to be forced and dominated.

    • It clearly is, and I have heard essentially identical experiences from many other women.

    • It's true.

  • Though humans have complex brains, they are also animals, they fantasize and can do crazy shit. I don’t believe there is any human that doesn’t fantasize on some crazy or immoral stuff (like actually enjoying and fantasizing violent scenes in films) but it’s the presence of religion beliefs, some social moral authority and law that stop them from actually doing it.

  • I experience it all the time. Slapstick comedy used to be very popular. Laurel and Hardy, the Three Stooges, pratfalls, pies in the face. With the sound effects, that stuff can be super funny but only when I know it's not real and nobody gets harmed. The same with cartoons.

I actually love revenge movies in which a bad guy spends the entire movie demonstrating how deserving he will be when he finally gets his. I laugh my ass off when he finally get killed in the most creative and painfully way.
I guess that's an example of Schadenfreude.

But I do NOT get any thrills or pleasure from depictions of suffering by innocent people. I was never fond of the kind of horror movies in which innocent people get murdered and mutilated by psychos. I get no "harm joy". So, I guess schadenfreude is selective.

That being said, I have a confession. I, like the anon girl, find rape scenes in films erotic. I am 1000% opposed to rape or abuse in real life. But fantasy is different.

From my point of view, as a man, there is something erotic about a woman in a helpless situation being coerced or forced, not so much violently, but more like having no choice but to strip and submit. Along with images of her soft, supple body, her body language, the sensations you are imagining her feeling - things like helplessness, vulnerability, degradation, disgust, fear, anticipation; complete submission.

There was a forced BJ scene in the movie Siberia with Keanu Reeves that was super hot.

I occasionally write sexual fantasy stories. Something that comes up once in a while is a slave girl-type thing. For example, an exceptionally beautiful, haughty young princess is captured in a war between two kingdoms. She is brought before the king who turns out to be exceedingly masculine. He is pleased with the captive and orders her brought to his chambers that evening after she has been fed and bathed. You can imagine what uses she is put to. But throughout it all, she winds up orgasming many times and with greater intensity than she has ever experienced. 😂
So if the character isn't suffering, that's not schadenfreude. Plus the observer is inhabiting either or both characters.

LMAO. With fantasies, you can make up any scenario you want. Nothing is over the top when you're writing a short story, novel, or movie script. Passion, drama, suspense, intense emotions and sensations. The more shocking, the better. That's why they call it "shock value".

Whether a person creates fantasies in their head, reads steamy novels, or enjoys seeing scenes acted out on film, it's all the same. Just shocking, thrilling fantasy. But you are safe and everyone else is safe. And there is no evidence that one who has wild fantasies is likely to act them out for real.

I read that an active imagination is a sign of intelligence.

  • By the way, I felt bad for the coyote...

Anyway, yes, that girl is operating out of a trauma which is controlling her.

No, I don't enjoy seeing people suffer. I think some personalities do like to see suffering, some more than others. Traumas and conditioning would influence that. Where's the love in watching people suffer? That's not of God ( love).

I do enjoy my wife when she beats me. like, she beats my head and back, it's a nice massage, I reciprocate. Lets off a lot of stress.

  • I admit I have felt that way, but more in a "who's laughing now?" sense than anything else.
This person, for the whole eight months we had knew each other, made a point of humiliating, demeaning and overall make my life hell.
When a couple of years this person later came to me in search of help - most likely because they were scratching the bottom of the barrel - it was a special kind of satisfaction to see how the "beast" had become so broken and defeated - this was someone who used to sneer and laugh at other people' suffering, but now they would wince if I barely raised my voice.
It is indeed a oddly pleasuable feeling to see what people are capable of once they've lost their dignity - I still helped them out, though.

  • Heck I'm just voting E because Wile Coyote is my all time favourite cartoon character, and just once I'd like to see him catch that blasted roadrunner!

  • That always just creeps me out down to the core.
I'm really pick of the types of movies I what h as anybody being hurt in any type of evil way... gives me the feeling of watching forbidden stuff

  • I like to be dominate in bed but in a playful dominance way , I don’t want to inflict damaging pain on her leaving bruises and marks all over her body , but being a little rough and making her my slut and her being submissive to me is sexy , and it’s sexy if she dominates me as well at times just to spice things up , But to get to a point where she really wants me to inflict pain on her is not my thing , I knew a girl that wanted me to tie her up in the woods and pretty much wanted me to inflict pain on her like she was being raped , she was hot and the thought of it was kind of sexy but when it really set in and I thought about it , I was like No not my thing , Her screaming and tied up in the woods I felt like I be setting myself up to be arrested , I don’t see how leaving severe wounds and bruises on someone is a turn on honestly , but for each their own I guess , so even though I wanted to fuck her , I chickened out and said fuck that. But if she wanted playful dominance I don’t have a problem with that

  • I used to when i was younger but now i don't really ever feel like that unless i'm pissed off at/don't like someone and something bad happens to them

  • Generally I don't enjoy watching someone suffer, but the real answer to such a question may be rather tricky. A lot of cartoons for instance depict a bad guy getting some form of punishment, and everyone laughs, me included...

Somewhere I also read that loving to watch a woman having an orgasm could somehow be considered loving to watch her suffer, even if imagining a lady complaining about that kind of suffering seems rather silly. Well, what kind of complain by the way ;0)

Digging deeper that question may reveal how tortuous the mind's ways are...

  • In cartoons, movies or t. v. shows, when we KNOW it's not real; yeah.
Unless it was in a porno, which I doubt because I don't go in for that sort of shit, even if I KNOW it's faked, the only rape I thought was cool was in the movie, "Flesh + Blood" where Rutger Hauer started raping this girl (Jennifer Jason Leigh?) in the movie and she took the bull by the horns and started raping him!!

  • I think you have gone a little crazy.

    • Very well could be... lol

    • Truthfully, I do not like pain and suffering. If you asked me for a spanking I would decline.

    • Really? ... why do I not believe that? The spankings I am familiar with lead into some very nice things, but I digress... lol

  • Schadenfreude doesn't really count in this case though, right? Because if it's about enjoying someone else's misfortune, and she self-inserts into those fantasies that she has and sees, then that wouldn't be schadenfreude.

  • Only to the extent where we see little kids swinging the little plastic baseball bat for the first time and whack dad in his nuts. Or when a skateboarder is sliding down a railing on his board and falls on the railing and hits his nuts.

But seeing someone in pain cruelly caused by someone else sets my blood boiling.
It infuriates me. That's is evil.

  • Nope never i would rather see them scream with pleasure lol 😆

    • First i thought it was some french dish lol

    • It's German silly... lol

    • Yeah but i didn't know that lol 🤣 only after reading the explanation i came to know

  • I'm not a schadenfrande but i like to be more machosim and i have weird fantasies also related toBDSM.

  • Just watched Jackass 4.5. Lots of laughing at others getting pranked. Not sure if that counts though.

  • C with the exception of media. lol

  • the idea of rape and incest as a fantasy subject is not all that uncommon. So i believe this is a sexualized fantasy about rape and being over powered. i know a couple of women that are submissive to their Dom or Master. they are sexual slaves and even like play rape. so yeah. i can see this woman seeing rape fantasy and being dominated sexually appealing.

  • Yeah. I think that is human nature. People laugh at people that fall in public, or get into a fight or something. Now moral compasses differ on illegal stuff. I wouldn’t be laughing if we met and real life and saw you get raped.. I would intervene and help you.. so i guess it’s to the degree we are talking about. But it happens to everyone
