No, bulking up is not a good idea for a woman, and you don't need to be muscular to defend yourself against an evil man either.

If you want to be fit, take a REAL military style martial arts class, such as Isshinryu, and 5 hours per week of cardio kickboxing. You'll keep the soft, graceful look, and you'll still be able to rip an evil man's head off if necessary. My former instructor's wife is a 6th degree black belt now,, 135 to 140 pounds solid muscle, and she is 51 years old, and she could easily win the UFC men's heavyweight division... they'd never even hit her, and she'd tap them all out with something none of them have ever seen before... shed use a different submission every fight and beat ever last one of them.
