There is history on this! Originally, porn was just short clips called "Stag films" that were underground. But with the loosening of sexual mores, the restrictive "Hays Code" was replaced by the Motion Picture Association Rating System, introduced in 1969. A special Rated X category was created for material "forbidden to minors but still with artistic merit", or something like that. (Today that category is NC-17).
And along came full - length pornographic movies, on actual celluloid film, with actual acting, plots, and storylines, and even special effects where that was part of the story. They were always low budget and never quite Hollywood grade, but it was a significant change. Theaters opened that would show such movies, where anyone old enough could pay the fee and go in, and they profited. Porn actors like Marilyn Chambers, Linda Lovelace, and Johnny Wadd (John Holmes) became household names, even known to grade schoolers such as myself back then. This became known as the Golden Age of Porn:

But with the mass production of inexpensive videotape players in the 1980s, with even better DVD players by the 1990s, people took to watching their porn at home, and those porn theaters all closed. Like @RedInnocent68 wrote, many of the viewers didn't care about stories and just wanted to get off.
There is a telling scene in the movie "Boogie Nights" (1997), fiction but based upon actual porn industry events, where porn producer Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), who wants to keep making actual porn movies with plots, has a New Years Eve 1979 argument with financers Floyd Gondolli (Philip Baker Hall) and The Colonel (Robert Ridgely), who tell him they are sorry but things are changing, and it will be videotapes with short bits of people fucking, and the old (in) famous porn stars will become essentially unknowns:

if the full length film is going to have a narrative then i may be interested. but it seems like 99% of porn movies now are just sex scene, cut to sex scene, cut to sex scene. so in that format i tend to just want to see the shorter scenes with performers or acts i prefer rather than watch a longer movie of sex scenes i'm not interested in

@laurieluvsit l prefer long quality films with a story. It’s much more pleasing and arousing when there’s actual context and reason for whatever’s happening. I really wish there would be actual “porn rom-coms”. Of course, the actresses and actors (!) have to be good looking and the sex done really well.
It depends on the situation.
If I am alone watching, it is to get some ideas, for scenarios to play or positions to try. So I would go for full length with a genre.
But for parties, I have a friend who is preparing very nice compilations with music. I think it is called PMV for Porn Music Video. So it is a lot of short scenes compiled together in one long video. These are running on several screens with good music. It is really great for a sex party.
For years and years I survived mostly on "quickie" porn that's not long enough for me to get off. Once file sharing kicked in I could finally download long duration video files. Now I rarely go to porn sites for mastabatory aid.

It depends. When I was younger, I occasionally went to an adult theater and watched a full-length film. Really got my motor running. Now, I usually watch 10-20 minute videos, which also get my motor running.
Honestly I prefer the porn videos to be not too long, and of course featuring my favourite themes: genuine amateurs and masturbating women.

I'm less picky on length and more picky on quality/genre/art style. If its too short it can be looped in a gif, set on repeat, or used as a still image.

Almost every full-length porn movies I've watched, and that's not many, seemed truly dumb and painfully boring. The sex scenes were the same, repetitive acts just done by different characters. The plots are always idiotic. On the other hand, I enjoyed "The Girlfriend Experience", especially season 1, but that was a series not a movie.
Depends on the circumstances. When I watch porn with a few friends, it's usually a long one. If it's about watching together with a girl, for example as a suggestion, then a short film is better.
The free samples of porn vids is annoying when I can’t see the whole thing. Videos related to my kink or fetish for fullback panties are the best.
