  • Personally I don't see it as normal. I mean in Italy some marriages have happened in previous generations before mine between cousins but I wouldn't and couldn't because it's just not normal in my mind.

    • It’s normal in the Bible.

    • Thank you!!

  • It’s allowed but not many people do it. Or maybe they do, I don’t know 🤷🏾‍♀️

  • Second cousin marriages are legal everywhere, so we are talking only about first cousin marriages when discussing incest. First cousin marriages are not forbidden by the Bible or the Quran. In ancient and even more recent cultures in which the bride's family paid a dowery to the groom or the groom's family, first cousin marriages were favored as a means of maintaining accumulated wealth within the family. Aside from moral considerations, incest if universally disfavored because of the increase incidence of birth defects among the offspring of incestuous matings. However, the rate of defects among the offsping of first cousin marriages is drastically less than the rate of sibling or parent-chold incest, and is only slightly more than the rate for the offspring of non-incestuous matings.

First cousin marriages are legal in approximately half of the US states, and worldwide, about 10% of all marriages are between first- or second-cousins. Kershaw, Sarah (26 November 2009). "Shaking Off the Shame". The New York Times.

    • Kissin' (second) Cousins are not an issue.

    • That is the gist of my first sentence.

  • Its certainly not seen as normal here in Thailand , pretty Western now really , its not something I've ever seen.

  • It’s definitely normal, the problem is that children they conceive they’re luckily to become abnormal or have a genetic disease

    • Do you mean likely?

    • Yeah

  • No it's not normal, 1st and 2nd cousin should be a no, id say maybe 3rd cousin and beyond may be distant enough, the relations are usually by marriage by then, you can't help who your family members marry

    • Second cousins are distant so it's fine

  • Asian here. Incestuous marriage is not normal and definitely illegal here in the Philippines. I know Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore doesn't favor to it either.

    • Nor does Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Japan, Myanmar, China - it's absolutely NOT favoured in oriental Asia !

    • @pierre7i I was mostly thinking of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc

    • Agreed. My Wife = Philippine. The culture is likely similar in Cambodia and Laos.

  • A lot of families do this, even in the states to an extent

    • Do you think it should be legal everywhere, pm me

  • Not just middle east and Asia. You can even do that here in America. The reason why marriage between cousins isn't that bad is because the bloodline is more removed than if it was brother and sister.

  • Some states recognize a marriage between cousins as legal, don't know which

  • It is in Muslim countries; particularly Pakistan. Not much in South and East Asian places.

  • The Middle East is in Asia. Muslims marry cousins for cultural reasons and Indians to keep wealth in the family. The Russians and the oriental/Far Eastern don’t.

  • It's normal in some American cultures, too. Remember Jerry Lee Lewis?

  • I'm sorry but I don't know never been to that side of the world

    • Only minority communities.
    • The financial reasons.
    • Old backward customs.
  • In “THEIR CULTURE it’s NORMAL”

  • This is mainly practiced in poor rural villages or radical sects, because they want to keep the land in the family. I've only ever met one British-Pakistani girl whose parents were cousins

  • The middle east is completely patriarchal. Women are treated like property there and are even blamed for men's crimes against them. Nothing they do there should be considered a standard for normalcy.

  • I’m guessing it does happen, but it’s not seen normal.

  • Different cultures have different rules. It is not right or wrong, Just different.

  • There? Possibly, it isn't here. FGM is normal in central Africa, not here. Circumcision is normal in the US, but not most of the world.
