Just watched the season Spartacus and I want to ask that how open do you think were earlier generations in regards to sexuality and same sex etc?
elizamichale1Guru
I heard my brother praising this drama so i just finished watching the drama Spartacus and my first reaction to those times is this that it was very brutal, cruel and unjust society and times. But also what i liked about those times is this that if you take out slavery then it was a time of boldness openness and no body would object to your sexuality (if you are in to same sex, straight or like it in groups) nobody objected the way everyone would dress and nobody bothered where one was getting intimate at. What's your take on this? Would you like to be in that era if possible? Or its much better that its not possible to have those practices anymore and you are happy to be part of what we have nowadays?
Thanks for your opinions and time.
(A) The drama truly depicts roman and ancient history and i wish i could be part of that
Vote A
(B) It was an era of just slavery, brutality and cruelty so i don't wish to be part of that
Vote B

It wasn't just the Romans. People everywhere across Europe were more open about sex. Men would fuck whoever was below them in social status, woman, younger men, slaves even animals. Greek Spartans were encouraged to form homosexual relationships to strengthen their fighting prowess, inspired by Hercules who regularly had gay sex with his charioter. Celtic culture was steeped in sex with a belief you could gain an animals strength by fucking it. Hopefully as Christianity declines we'll get a return to our natural ways.

People are still having sex last time I checked. Perhaps we're just not as public about it. I think it would be great to have slaves. Most were actually very well treated and nothing like the black slaves of more recent history.

That is the biggest bunch of bullshit I've read LOL.. men would fuck women blow them men were also fuck boys blow them they wouldn't fuck animals unless they didn't have anybody below them and Christianity is not going to decline and even if it did it doesn't matter three major religions of the world Judaism Christianity and Muslim which all share a root from a single father Abraham and the same God they all believe the same things regardless.. And it's natural to have sexual relations with the opposite sex because if you didn't and you only had sexual relations with the same sex that would seriously put a stunt on reproduction now would it the only natural way is male female because sex is about reproduction not pleasure

there is no difference. . They were into homosexuality. pedofhilia , transgender, drugs , killing off people that got in the way. Wars limited to now but they saw it as just important. Now what is different now , than then?

They were more open regarding sexuality, would definitely enjoy living in that era 😜
Well considering that its not accurate to the times I would say don't read into it. The roman empire took place over a large period of time (centuries) and the feelings towards sex did change over that time period. At the brink of collapse it became far more open like it is now a days (where certain groups where overly decadent and others found it to be disgusting (they also believed other groups and cultures where superior at this point in time (some historians stating how great the germans where for being brave and also more traditional when it came to sex (i. e. monogamous))). But this is a natural cycle, when a society gets to comfortable decadence becomes all encompassing because the society has forgotten why it bothers to exist to begin with, they stop struggling and so the only thing to live for is pleasure. This weakens the society (at the end of rome they had begun to have rapid inflation (as we have now), started to create the beginings of a welfare state (as we have now), single mother hood became prominent thanks to the complete irresponsibility of individuals and their inability to act like adults, instead opting to act like children incapable of restraining their emotions and desires (as we see now), and increased rates of promiscuity. Eventually the society couldn't handle this and collapsed because no one wanted to be responsible and do work, they didn't want to try and build something for the future because they where to fixated on the here and now (again, like today). But none of this is unique to Rome. Persian empire experienced this, so to did Asian societies, so did Britain.
As for homosexuality, sure they where "open" to it, as most societies where, that is to say they where open to it under very strict circumstances. For instance the "receiver" was always viewed as inferior and effiminate when it came to male on male homosexual acts. You could have sex with another man (and this was greatly over stated and not as common as its presented (again, just like today (homosexuals, bisexuals and trans combined make up at the most generous estimate 10% of the population (and most realistic estimates place that at about 5%)), however it was expected that after you where done, you went home and you tended your fields, you provided for your family and you raised your children. They where allowed to "get it out of their system", so to speak. But again, this is not unique in any way, edo period japan did this, with claims of "only a warrior can truly understand another warrior". This happened with every empire as it decayed so to did the belief in the society, so to did the general sense of purpose and drive and thus as those decreased decadence and self indulgence increased. Those however tended to apply only to those in positions of power and those in cities who where far more pampered then those outside of cities who still had to fight and work to survive. Those people still kept with traditional views. Also fun fact, feudalism was directly caused by the decadence of rome because as things worsened people wanted to try and escape more and more from life with decadence so problems worsened to the point where people started selling themselves into slavery in order to escape debt. This was the foundation of the feudalist system (of one powerful land owner with many "serfs"(people who where either slaves, semi free (they didn't own land but had to pay the landowner for resources to grow food), and free workers. So no, not a good time period, it was brutal (though even that is over stated (most gladiatorial matches for instance did not end in death (they spent good money on those fighters and spent a long time training them, no one would be too happy about losing such an investment), and it was a period where people where weak which allowed for great travesties to occur to the later generations because of their weakness.

As brutal as the Romans were, the other people of that time were even worse. The Carthaginians used to do child sacrifices. The gladiators were technically at the level of slaves, and had short brutal lives. At the same time, some gladiators were adored almost like rock stars, and even wealthy women (and wealthy men) wanted to do them, kind of what Phineus was describing in Hunger Games the Mockingjay. At the time of Spartacus, even the Romans were politically split between plebs and optimates, and depending on who was in power, you could lose your life just by being on the wrong side. The sex usually involved forced sex with a slave, so obviously the one being forced would have a miserable life.

By the way, that Spartacus series had a young Julius Caesar as a spy, which was not true. Caesar was not famous in Rome until about 10 years later, never involved in the Spartacus thing, but he was known for being sexually perverse, would go both ways, and try anything.

Taking an honest look at the society there were obvious good and obvious bad. Even if you remove slavery. In regards to sex and openness. Pedophilia was accepted. Homosexual pedophilia in particular was rampant. The concepts we have regarding statutory rape being a thing did not exist in their society.
It was a time a warring nation attacked another purely to take the women so the soldiers had sex partners.
There's a reason Rome fell. They did have some amazing accomplishments considering the time.

Im open minded so I'm not judgmental in anyway in fact I might have enjoyed that time period cuz it was so free sexually. Not to get religious or anything but it all changed when Christianity came around and started labeling sex as sin and judging us for it. I mean the 80s if a guy got aids he was a fag in society's eyes even though he could have fucked a chick who had it, perfect example the movie Dallas buyers club. Its just sex man and should be enjoyable no matter who you're fucking. Todays society is so judgmental that people forget who they truly are just to fit in. Hollywood stars the macho men we think are macho are usually gay or bisexual but cuz they're famous people dont care. So my opinion is this, and I'm a christian by the way, is people have mistaken Christianity and twisted it to fit their own beliefs thus for forgetting the true nature behind Gods word which is all about loving one another no matter of race, color, sexuality, or religion. But Im just a dumb ass, blue collar, rebel rousing, horny as hell white boy that doesn't know when to have a filter or keep my opinions to myself lol

As in all series, there are many things that are done to gain audience and are therefore far from realistic, but it is clear that Christianity caused a transformation in the morality of the population that raised the levels of modesty. That had negative and positive effects, a positive effect is that the venereal diseases decreased, a negative one is that the independence of women in their sexuality decreased. Personally I am far from being a conservative person, at least what the series presents in relation to sexuality attracts me a lot. (except for slavery) The actresses of that series were very attractive. I always regretted that in my country they did not give the last two seasons.

Yep. They were also, to use modern terminology, really into shota, in a practice called pederasty. There is also a verse in the New Testament of the Bible where Paul criticizes gay relationships, but it's actually a poor translation, as he was actually talking about this act of pedophilia.

I think shows and movies are a bit over dramatic when it comes to that... they tend to go a bit over, but I also think it's not that far off. Yeah, the Greek, Roman and English empires were savages. They didn't care about anything, most of all women and there right... they also murdered and killed just for just for fun (gladiator sport). I'm pretty sure, from actual study from history, rapes were common, incest was common, and forced "arranged" marriages were also common..

He is absolutely correct. In roman times the owner of property was the ruler. That person was almost always a man and he had the right to put his penis in any hole that he liked. If he wanted to be a bottom, well that was scandalous. No Roman male of worth would let himself be penetrated by another man. There were rumors surrounding Nero about that. He hang around with theater folk, it is only in recent history where performers have been held in high regard, and he let men fuck him in the ass. Ancient Rome was open sexually but not necessarily in a good way.
