So many is relative statement, the US is big and has more people than some surrounding countries. So there will be more of most things. Also groups tend to form around similarities. Statistically it is uncommon and on par with other mental illnesses.
Well there isn't that many they take up i think like 1% or something. I think the big reason is that in the usa (of course depending on where you are) they won't automatically be killed.
