Why do you think women get hypersexualized in modern media?

Why do you think women get hypersexualized in modern media?
I don't buy that it's because "sex sells". I think the creators typically just want to see sexy women. Examples:

1) Carrie 1976: made by a straight man. There's a locker room scene that leers over the girls' naked bodies as they take showers & prance around.

2013 remake (directed by a woman, script written by a gay man): no voyeuristic leering. The girl who played the protagonist was underage, but even the other actresses who were 18+ all had clothing on & there was no leering at their bodies whatsoever.

2) In media created by gay men, the sexualization is reversed. Look at AHS, created by a gay man. Compare 2 shower scenes, one involving men and one involving women.

The first video voyeuristically leers at the men's wet naked bodies as they shower, but the second video is filmed from outside the shower stalls & doesn't show the women's bodies at all. Why? Because the creator is a gay man & he's not attracted to women. Also, in AHS, masturbation scenes for women tend to focus on their face and their fantasies (even in the case of a sexy seductress trying to seduce a man, she had clothes on), whereas in the masturbation scenes for men, the men are naked with their buff bodies on display.

3) In more media created by gay men (such as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, created by the same gay guy who wrote Carrie 2013) you get scenes like this, with buff men walking around nearly naked & displaying their butts in thongs.(I actually didn't know the creator of this show was gay, and then after seeing those scenes I suspected it was created by a gay guy, so I looked it up & my suspicion was confirmed.)

So yeah. If women are hypersexualized for logical reasons like "sex sells" then the sexualization wouldn't be reversed when the male creator is attracted to men and not women.

Thoughts?

(Note: I know some women hypersexualize characters too. That film Cuties is proof of that. I think it's more common for male creators, though.)
I think it's usually for logical reasons (sex sells)

For the people saying men are equally objectified: Women make up only 1/3 of speaking characters, and are over 5x as likely to be seen in sexy clothing as men, and over 3x as likely to be seen partially naked.

Women aren't given as much opportunity as men to have an acting role in a nonsexualized context.

The people saying I don't believe "sex sells" have created a strawman argument I never said. It's true that sex sells, but I dont think thats the main reason creators incorporate sex into their media. Also if you justify the objectification of women by saying "sex sells", I don't want to hear you criticizing webcam models and onlyfans models etc. If you say it's okay for men to make money by objectifying women then it's hypocritical to criticize women for making money the same way.

  • Me are as well have you seen magic mike? Yes women tend to be more sexualized but men tend to be more romanticised.

Watch any rom com and men are these perfect people and are ready to give up everything for the lead lady.

In the same way sexualized women set to high of standards for men, over romaticised men set high standards for women.

    On the why? Sex sales

    • If men don't want to be sexualized then they can get a role in one of the myriad movies/shows that don't hypersexualize men. Meanwhile, women are often pressured into sexualizing themselves if they want an acting job.

    • Women can say no to them roles even with pressure. However most actresses won't say no since they are trying to make money and to a curtain degree its a part of the job.

    • Women can say no, but then they look elsewhere and have trouble finding roles. Meanwhile, men can reject a role that involves sexualization, and find countless other roles to take instead. I posted a link in my update that shows that women make up only 1/3 of speaking characters, and are sexualized 3-5x more often than men.

  • You are right it's not all sex sells but people wanting to be sexy does play a role

  • It’s a cycle of things. Sex selling is part of it but sex wouldn’t “sell” if it wasn’t being used as currency in the first place.

From what I’ve observed a lot of girls who objectify themselves do it as a means to receive validation and attention. I believe it starts at home or wherever they’re being raised. If they’re not brought up feeling loved and validated they’ll seek it else where because the feeling of “belonging” is a basic human need. Most people need love or else they’ll suffer from emotional damage. If a girl dresses sexually she’ll easily get attention from men and this can seem like “positive” validation. It might not be a good source but it’s still a source.

Now with boys, they need the same thing. If a boy isn’t brought up feeling loved and wanted he will seek it out elsewhere. For most straight boys this will be through girls. Girls and boys aren’t attracted by the same things though. A boy can’t dress sexually and get the attention from girls. But what he can do is attract them with “money” which allows him to provide her with security.

Women can use their bodies to get male attention. Men can use money to get female attention. Women can’t use money to get men and men can’t use their bodies to get women. This attention can be interpreted as validation. But since it’s not genuine it doesn’t last. So they have to keep feeding into it. This is why things like porn, strip clubs, and the things you speak about exist. Some guys go to strip clubs just to talk to a woman privately for a few minutes without wanting a lap dance. It’s sad. It’s easier for a man to buy female attention than it is to earn it with his personality. It’s easier for a woman to get male attention with her body than it is with her personality. It’s basically drugs that can be bought. Validation is like a drug. You get highs from it if you’re not used to getting it and then you become addicted and reliant on it.

I think women get hypersexualized in modern media because someone figured out it makes money. But the reason it makes money is a deeper issue that I don’t think many people look into. The root of it is kids not being brought up in environments that provides all the emotional needs they need. I don’t think a lot of parents “know” how important it is and realize the consequences. We only notice hyper-sexuality in “women” but those women were girls at one point. We can’t assume that every woman who’s sexualized is against it. Women objectify themselves all the time. Fansonly? Cam girls?

It starts at childhood. Hypersexualization is just one of the few. School shooters, suicide victims, domestic abuse, rapists, etc. All of this stuff starts with how a child is nurtured

  • Im hahaglad you were able to whittle it down from a dozen options to only five, which is three too many...

  • No. The fashions for women are different than men is all, it's little to do with sexualisation. Also, most films are just the same plots and stories told in a different way. Hence very little is really new and/or breaks from the usual gender role tropes.

As for your assertion on "acting roles" - you've probably been watching more porn than real movies Plenty of leading roles are given to women and they are even given awards. But as most movies are just rewrites of older scripts, it would be a bit daft to put a woman in the role. For example in world war movies.

    • I gave a source about a study that women only get 33% of speaking roles

  • Both but who cares shrugs. And of course as a straight man myself when i write a stories if it was to be sex part or something sexual it will be 100% focused on the women. Just cause that is the way i go and like, Although that been said i wouldn't mind making a story focused on evan peters been sexy because well he is. When people write stories it's how we personally want characters to be and well if we want are main role to be a sexy women nothing wrong with that. Same goes for a sexy guy. It's not really an issue that should been seen as an issue unless if there is some clearly distasteful thing for the sake of it but that is hard to judge depending on things.

And that maybe the industry should be more clear what they want so the girl or guy knows that they will be subjected to do something like that. But on the most part they are. But there is cases where of course they wasn't. But most women and guys know what there signing up for. Like someone pointed out a Got star wasn't really comfortable with the sex scenes even tho that is literally what the show is about and the book. And 100% would of been told to her there will be nudity parts you will have to do. Trying to back out is kinda been on the rollercoster after it's already got to the top for it's first fall.

  • women are NOT hypersexualized

  • The media has no ethics or moral fiber. If it makes revenue, they will do it.

  • Everyone gets hyper sexualized in the media. every show and every movie has beautiful looking people. everyone is fit. aside from the occassional chubby funny actor. everyone who gets cast looks like models to get their roles. men and women.

  • I think creators possibly subconsciously see their medium as a chance to bring their fantasies to life and they roll with it

  • You answered your own question. “Sex sell” BECAUSE people want to see sexy women! 😛

  • All of the above probably.
You can't deny how the the media uses a cute/ sexy girls to advertise things.

And guys fall for that shit.

  • Of course the director in Hollywood influences movies but sex sells whether it's in advertising or whatever and just talking about the first movie with a shower scene of women that might be enough to sell to most guys... Still believe sex sells but yes I agree with you directors also pick what they want to some degree they're still wanting to make money

    • I agree with your update... I am not a person that has a problem with anyone doing anything that doesn't hurt someone else... So I have no problem with women that are selling pictures or videos or their body it doesn't make sense to me why they can't a man can sell his body to remover refrigerator so I can a woman sell her body to remove stress...

  • I think its self explanatory. Women are not hypersexualized in your examples simply because the creators did not have that in their vision for the movie, as they dont find that attractive. However they did the opposite for the men that coincidently is something for women.

Some creators simply take things in the polar opposite direction or completely change the entire view of the story to what they envisioned it to be.

Sex sells is a fact. Its why many females use social media to profit off their bodies, or as marketing for only fans. Its why you see most female celebrities completely change the way they represent themselves when they become famous. Its the reason album artwork gets more nude over time, why so many adds on websites can be in some way porn or sex related, and why porn in general is so popular despite society acting like its a horrible thing that really they secretly indulge in.

A lot of times hypersexualized women just enhances or adds to things and enhances a film or media experience.

  • Sex does sell. Sex appeal sells. That's why people buy porn.

  • 100%. Just look at modern music videos even. Look at WAP - Cardi B. I think it’s all intertwined with the modern feminist movement which promotes the idea promiscuity is empowering. Sexuality always sells, but it’s been especially amplified at the same rate of progressivism in US culture.

  • Sex sells. So sure... Other countries sexualize men... Wish they would do more of that in American films

    • Watch media by gay men

    • Ryan Murphy and Roberto Aguirre Sacasa are some good gay creators that have what you're looking for (sexy guys)

  • It’s just not men who are sexualizing women. Some females intentionally do this. Some female directors and executives want to sexualIze women.

    • Absolutely.

  • dude why would the creators of a movie want to see sexy women when they its the viewers who are gonna watch the movies they create?

it is because sex sells. the viewers are perverted and love seeing hot women in action so what are these creators gonna do? ohh I know, add sexy women to their film

    • "why would the creators of a movie want to see sexy women when they its the viewers who are gonna watch the movies they create?" Did you know that many of the creators actually get to be in the presence of the naked women during the filming process?

    • "Did you know that many of the creators actually get to be in the presence of the naked women during the filming process?" no shit Sherlock, its their job. they need to be present to see if everything is going to plan. do you think people who work at McDonalds only go to work to see the food they're serving? also talking from experience, if they really wanted to see hot naked women they can always go to the strip clubs; plenty of hot naked women there and for a few buck more they can touch and get lapdances as bonus. and if they wanted to go to the extreme they can hire escort as well

    • By putting naked women in their films, they don't have to pay for it. They can see hot women WHILE getting paid.

    • Show All
  • Because sex sells. That's why you see over sexualized young teenagers, older women getting their faces tightened with Botox, silicon implants etc. Movies will often seek an "R" rather than a "GP" rating because they know that kids who aren't even supposed to be allowed in R rated movies will not go to a movie as if it is rated PG than if it is rated R
