Based on what I've heard/read the actual average is around 5-5½" inches and the self reported average is about 2 inches more than that.

Actually, the average erect penis length in most of the world is 5¼-5½ inches. Statistically, 50% of all guys will have an average or larger than average penis, but most will be only slightly larger.
All these guys here are full of shit. Only about 10% are larger than 6.
