Could improved sexual health education and wider access to birth control be more effective in reducing abortion rates across America?

In 2009, Colorado implemented a program that provides free IUDs to teens, which had a significant positive impact on teen pregnancies and abortion rates.

From 2009 to 2016, the state saw a 54% drop in teen birth rates and a 64% decrease in teen abortion rates.

This helped young women to make informed choices about their reproductive health but it also saved the state nearly $70 million in public assistance costs.

This showcases the effectiveness of providing access to long term contraception and the potential of such programs to influence public health positively.

Should other states follow suit?

  • Of course they should, but you're flying in the face of religiosity and prudishness that is alive and well today.

Informed youths choose protection and practice safer sex. But there is such anti sex feeling in America, it baffles me. And on the other hand, there are many people who want to control women's bodies and choices.

They choose to "punish" women for HAVING sex and think that forcing women to stay pregnant will stop them from having unprotected sex. It won't. The only thing that stops men and women from having unprotected sex is EARLY and CONSISTENT SEXUAL HEALTH INFORMATION. Starting in the fifth grade and continuing through high school.

The second part, as Colorado found, is easy, free and private access to birth control. Youth don't want to become parents, but the sexual urge is such a strong one that youth take ridiculous chances to have sex. And if there is some kind of parental consent involved in accessing birth control, no teen in the world is going to let their parents know they are having sex. So THEY DON'T USE PROTECTION to avoid this complication.

Birth control, as Colorado found out, is a fraction of the cost of pregnancy, birthing and raising an unwanted child, or giving one up for adoption.

Pregnancy should never be a punishment for having sex. This is all wrong. And no person should be forced to bear a child they never planned to have. Again. All wrong. Sex is a wonderful thing in and of itself. Safe sex is a joy to share with someone. Children who get EARLY SEX EDUCATION, have sex later in life than those who are kept ignorant due to their lack of knowledge about sex, birth and birth control.

And no one seems to address the economic and emotional costs of a child having a child. Or the fact that it's not the child who raises their child, but the child's parents, an additional burden and stress on another generations finances and emotions.

All wrong. Colorado is right. I hope some of these myopic other states do some research and reading. Foster care is the the worst place for a child to be raised. 50% of foster children end up in the prison system. This is not success. It's a national disgrace and a social failure. There is no infrastructure to aid minor mothers, or social supports to lay a path for such women's future success, along with the future success of their accidental children.

    • I tend to agree, but we disagree at the age of starting this education. 5th grade? Children that age should be enjoying their youth, not worrying about adult behavior. The earlier you indoctrinate someone the sooner they will use that information. I never heard of any girl getting pregnant in grade school or Jr. High. And only two in my years of high school, and that was cheerleaders and football players. Seems to me the more it is talked about the more someone's interest gets piqued. That goes for the rest of this stuff such as trans indoctrination. Children that age don't need to be presented with that information until they reach high school.

    • Well said screenwriter.

    • @YesterdaysChild I went to a Catholic school in New Orleans Louisiana. I got sex education information in fifth grade. It was simplistic basic info. This is how a man's and woman's body works starting at puberty. THEN, I went to the library and checked out further books on sexual functioning. I started menstuating at AGE 10. The very year I saw those filmstrips. So 10 is absolutely not too early to start sex education. Really smart parents start talking about sex with their children when they're even younger. I did. My son asked me where babies came from at age 3 or 4. I told him they come from a man and woman loving each other and the baby grows in the woman's body. That information lasted for him until he was about 10 and I gave him children's books on basic sexual topics. I also had The Joy of Sex on my bookshelf. He also had a library card and I didn't rifle through what books my son read. Just as my teacher mom didn't either.

  • As a nurse... Yes hell yes!

Under medicare the pill and others should have been free for every one

Yet the rates stay the same!

This would go so far in reducing abortions and trama from abortions

But the scientific friend did not want Thier free baby parts and cells to stop so the abortion clinics removed it!

So many women and girls are some how supposed sex leads to a baby! Thinking just the time of month saves them!

    • Thank you so much for mho!

  • Of course. Same with common sense same with people like you same with GaG. Look have you ever noticed. Did the people of the United States call our country the best in the world. It has the potential to be the best in the world we are failures and everything.
And like I've always said there's no such thing as a failure cuz you have to fail to succeed.. but our government who runs our country they are mentally retarded look how old they are look how much of a con they are they should all be in prison yet they run the world they hold us all back by the knowledge that we should all know that they restrain us from it
We should have the smartest kids the smartest doctors the best of every thing and we do because we the people keep pushing forward to become that person to become that country but our government takes it away from us. It's people like you who ask these questions on gag that one day will open up our minds and instead of sitting on our asses we will get up and we will do something about it we will become the best we will teach our children because that's when Life starts is when you are a child we have to learn the hard way in everything we do we find out by accident by mistake by questioning like yours we become bigger better people but yes you are completely right you would think our government would ask the same question and do something about it.

It's almost 2024 and we still are asking simple questions like this and elected officials are still doing nothing about them our leaders who can't seem to lead.

Out of 570 something elected officials Federal elected officials not one of them dare to stand up to be great I think you should run for office and make a change

  • With exception to condoms and the copper IUD, most chemical and hormonal forms of birth control are very dangerous to the health of a woman.

The bigger question should be is it the proper role of the state to be providing birth control and educating? Or is it parents who have the responsibility for their children under 18, and adults over 18 who have the responsibility for themselves? It seems to me that people should take initiative to manage their own lives instead of being micromanaged by government!

If you are going to have sex, then be responsible and learn what it will take to prevent pregnancy. Take some initiative and learn your body and the differences in each form of birth control so you can know what’s harmful and what’s not harmful. If still in doubt, then don’t have sex until you are ready to be responsible enough to have an income, a place of your own, and a real relationship of marriage so that children can be raised up and taken care of by a mother and father.

Parents of teens nowadays should actually take some initiative and care what their teen is up to and engaged in. That’s a much better approach than deferring a teenager over to the public (government) school system to be indoctrinated and have provided so called “free” birth control. It’s the lazy approach out instead of actually parenting in a responsible and mature manner.

    • I applaud trying to reduce if not even eliminate abortion across America. Abortion however should never be a form of birth control regardless.

  • They've been saying that it would since before I was born. Nearly everyone from my generation who wasn't home schooled had access to birth control and sex ed on some level. Planned Parenthood will give teens cheap birth control, and condoms are cheap and easy for anyone to buy, beg, or steal. Even if they didn't go to school, according to Planned Parenthood, 96% of parents believe in sex ed for kids. So, they'd be teaching them at home as well. 97% of kids have access to the internet and can look up sex ed all they want.

My husband was home schooled in a super religious anti sex house and still knew how to have safe sex and use a condom even without internet.

The majority of abortions are from educated women, in their late 20's, who have already had at least one child. They know exactly how sex and pregnancy work according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Abortions hit a 50 year low in 2015 and have INCREASED since then. Sex ed maxed out what it's capable of when it comes to reducing abortions. Current anti-child and pro selfishness culture have encouraged an increase again. The mantra of "unprotected sex is not consent to pregnancy" started in the same time frame. So, now people are well aware of what can happen, they just don't care and see nothing wrong with abortion since it's now so "normalized" as a primary birth control solution rather than a worst case scenario option.

There's a popular porn star who freely stated she's had over 19 abortions. When she finally tried to keep one of the babies, she miscarried.

STD rates have also increased since the ideologies that "a child is the worst that can happen" and "STDs aren't that bad" have made their rounds as well. Putting all of us at risk and ending lives needlessly rather than just using protection. It's an instant gratification and avoid any responsibility world right now. STD rates went from 25% to over 50% of the population by the age of 25. No one fears herpes (one of the leading causes of adult blindness), genital warts (a deadly cause of cancer), or HIV with daily cocktails of 25-40 pills that cause substantial bodily harm and side effects.

Ask anyone having risky sex why they would risk these, and they'll generally state that they aren't worried about them or don't see them as a big deal. Or, they believe that they "don't associate with people who would have STDs" as if you can tell by looking. If half of people have them, then we've all associated with them. It has nothing to do with them not being well aware that they exist and pose a risk. Everyone thinks they are the exception to the rule.

  • Yes. Like, provenly so. It's already happened that where there's better sex education & access to birth control, abortion rates go down. Bc unwanted & teen pregnancy goes down. Obviously

  • Yes I think it would have to have some positive merit !

  • If the GOP would back the fuck off reproductive rights, and completely change their focus away from targeting women and instead prosecute, lock-up, and hunt down those twisted persons who rape, assault, commit sexual violence to women and underage children, and those persons who commit incest. State laws have done little to nothing to protect women. They've only made it more and more dangerous to be a woman in this country.

Increases in family planning and reproductive health services does positively affect the community- this is old information and has been in use for years. However, such human rights are deeply and wrongly politicized, and idiotic, hate-filled political 'leaders' convince the public that their archaic and destructive policies are actually good, when in fact, all they do is cause harm, disarray, and death.

Contraception needs to be a codefied right across all states. Not some 'barely' there resource that can be almost impossible to find in some states and regions, and plentiful in others. The entire, read, ENTIRE Southern U. S., most of the midwest, and a large chunk of the mountain states have such deep restriction on abortion rights, contraception rights, and related items, that it's almost as if they don't even exist.

  • yes perhaps but abortion should still be an option. some abortions are effectively necessary to preserve the life and/or health of a mother and/or baby.

certainly education and access on sexual health is important and a result of Roe v Wade was HUGE expansions in reproductive healthcare. in fact sexual and preventive healthcare is more than 95% of the work that places like planned parenthood perform

  • The obvious answer is YES , education goes a long way , birth control access should be simple.

  • I think free birth control would go a long way honestly. I'm on my second IUD now and never worried about pregnancy or abortion. It's been extremely nice having that piece of mind honestly.

  • We should rely on abstinence. Not.

Who thought that was a good idea to begin with?

    ...

  • When I was a kid I got sex education introduction in fifth grade. I know a lot of schools either touch down loosely if at all now, and that isn't counting if they hand out free condoms like they did when I was a kid. It is dependent on the school.

I believe kids should get sex education early that revolves around healthy practice of safe sex, puberty explained, the option of ABSTINENCE, and handing out birth control for both boys and girls. At the end of the day sex is the responsibility of BOTH parties involved. Not one, but both.

  • no, tried and not work but for this goal teach Christianity in school to fear god and wait til wedding

    • for goal save state money on abortion we ALWAYS have been saying like reagan, stop government funding to abortion

    • America has been a predominantly Christian nation, and this still hasn’t worked. Thank you for your opinion though.

  • I totally agree

  • I don't think sex education more than its already taught will help. If you can't understand that having unprotected sex can lead to stds or pregnancy by age 14 then you probably failing math and other basic subjects anyway. But the free contraception is a solid investment. A lot of unwed single teen mothers I knew growing up got pregnant deliberately, there was free contraception available and sex education provided plenty of information. They saw it as a way of avoiding getting a job by getting welfare and child support.

    • I think most people know sex leads to std and pregnancy, but many believe they’re going to be an exception. Many people believe they’re financially and mentally ready to have a family when they’re not. So it’s not about sex education but rather the education of reality. I see a lot of women who got pregnant with an ideal in mind that oh I’ll just marry a nice provider man who’ll support us. Now those women are juggling both parenthood and work when they didn’t expect that one income wasn’t going to be enough. I saw that reality early with my own parents. And I knew I didn’t just want to marry some rich guy who was too busy working to help me change diapers. I dont think most people have a very accurate projection of reality, and risk pregnancy thinking everything will be fine because someone else is going to help out when the truth is, women are the ones stuck with most of the responsibility when they have kids.

    • Its also a cultural thing. At least it was in my community. Being a single mother was normal, their mother was a single mother and so was their grandmother. If you didn't want to be a parent you just get an abortion rather than contraception. All the fathers were gone or in jail.

  • My experience is that many men don't bother with contraception. I think that's a shame. It's not just about unwanted pregnancy but also about communicable diseases. I've often told men - with a condom or not at all. Then they looked stupid but there was nothing because they didn't have a condom. If you are important to someone, they will respect that. If not, then it's better to keep your hands off. Health is priceless.

  • I voted yes initially, but now I'm not too sure, because I got a vasectomy years ago, and I never wear condoms! So I'm not sure if that's the best for my sexual health. I probably should have answered not sure. But definitely helped the abortion rates go down!

  • the most effective way to reduce abortion rates is to make it so getting an abortion is illegal outside of survival of the mother. secondly outlaw and get rid of absolutely all forms of contraceptives. now that there are no contraceptives and no abortion both genders will be less likely to engage in sexual activity and if they do well now they have to live with the consequences of their actions. worked for thousands of years

    • That didn’t work well before RvW. Tens of thousands of abortions were performed by the Jane initiative. And now the Auntie initiative. These days it’s so easy to have an abortion at home with no one being the wiser.

    • contraceptives are a powerful tool to avoid accountability. if they remove all of them gets a lot harder to.

    • You don’t get to decide what accountability looks like for a woman. We do.

  • No, YOUR BIRTH CONTROLS are DEVIL'S PILLS..

    - You birth controls, does not break down in body and Comes out in piss.. Goes into water bodies..

    - That is re cycled and sent to your House as drinking water.. It's making your people mentally Ill And Gay.. 😒😒.

    - Sex isn't a Sports.. But if you want to, use natural methods..

    - Just Learn to Keep your Legs closed.. Or Stick to ORAL.

    • This is inaccurate information and also ridiculous. There is no connection between birth control pills and mental illness or sexual orientation. Natural birth control methods do not work for women who do not have regular periods. Illness may cause a woman's cycle to skip a month and, again, natural family planning methods would not work. Some people do not prefer to engage in oral sex. And that old saw about "keeping your legs closed" is just as ridiculous. Being realistic is the best medicine. People are going to have sex. Have many methods to prevent pregnancy. Don't relay scientifically erroneous misinformation such as you've touted.

  • Having the parents get involved rather than the government would help a lot.

  • Fathers setting a good example will fix most issues in the US and in the world

    • What does setting a good example look like in regards to this?

    • How much time do you have?

  • no i don't think the problem is lack of education or material. i think the problem is lack of personal responsibility. not sure if "education" can fix that.
