Did people have sexual kinks/fetishes back in the Victorian era?

What do you think the most common kinks were back then? More specifically, did people still enjoy sexual teasing back in Victorian times the same way they do today? (I ask this cause teasing is near and dear to my heart. Or at least my kitty.)

  • Most definitely, especially among the aristocracy. Oddly enough, from the one historian I read whose name escapes me, most of the of the stricter Victorian moral code seemed to be most in force in the middle class (the Mr. Darcy/Elizabeth Bennet level of society), and even then, I feel like Jane Austen even hints at goings ons behind the scenes of her own society in her novels. I have a feeling that your typical power play, light to medium BDSM sort of kinks were alive and well at the time, and do any of us really doubt that foot fetishes have always been around considering how common it is now?

    • Jane Austen was Regency period. Well before the Victorian age. And Elizabeth Bennet/Mr. Darcy were gentry; not LANDED gentry, but well above the level of middle class. If you like Jane Austen, you should try Mr. Darcy, Vampire. A fascinating book which explores the idea of "What if Mr. Darcy had been a hot vampire?"

    • I would argue that England wasn't all that different between the tail end of Jane's life in the early 1800s and and the mid 1800s that made up the heart of the Victorian era, personally. I suppose I should clarify when I say middle class, I don't mean it at all in the modern American definition, but more referencing the bourgeoisie (which I hesitate to use because of how associated it is with Marxism now) that the gentry made up the bulk of, separated from the true aristocrats of the time who got up to all sorts of sexual escapades with each other. And I hate to be that guy... But is there a movie of Mr. Darcy, Vampire? *he asks instead of googling*

    • It was VERY different. I totally agree with your second point. No. I wish LOL.

  • We haven't changed our fundamental sexuality in thousands of years. Social norms change but the underlying sexuality is constant. Today you see great popularity in Victorian romance novels about domestic discipline. As an inveterate spanko, I'm loving it.

  • Oh, yes they certainly did. BDSM, pornography, homosexuality - all of it was around back then. But outward society was very proper, and very prudish about sex. So it made the sexual taboos even more taboo, and the lengths one would go to hide secrets even more extreme.

    • I m also indulged in dis particularly girl treading over my body in high heels often called as high heel trampling but never got any chance. 😞

  • I can only hope woman of that age did I think there was less to do then now.

I think that I would do it all the time in that time I myself love it too very much

    • Me too!

    • I love it! Thank you Thor! (Perun/Perkunas?)

  • Well Victorian era was one of the most “prudish” sexually repressed times. But we know kinks always existed. Look at ancient India before Victorian period and the Kama sutra. But there might’ve been actually more kinky stuff just more hidden and not know then. Because sometimes the kinkiest people or Kinkiest stuff happens when people are told things are wrong or sex is wrong this creates a taboo. Which makes sex or perhaps even more desire for sex and kinky stuff. Human nature to want more of what you’re told is bad or should not be expressing yourself in a way.

  • Oh they most certainly did :p I believe that's when the free love movement the writer of Frankenstein got caught up in occured.

People have been kinky since prehistory :p

    • That was Romanticism. A little after Jane Austen, but still well before the Victorian period.

    • Marry Shelly was most certainly part of the free love movement. 1798 to 1851. Look up her parents and her relationship with Lord Byron.

    • I absolutely agree! Byron is my fave :-)

  • They were the biggest pervs of them all.

  • I am quite sure the Victorians had as wide a sexual repetoire as other humans from all other periods of history..
Gentlemen of the era were quite fond of being mercilessly flogged by beautiful women. A consequence of the disciplinary practices common in the public schools of the day. Pain releases endorphins equlals pleasure.
Reference von Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Fur.

  • I do love this era and when I think of how much music, art and dressing was fashionable, I am totally sure they had that. This is more about urges and instincts. Almost my all desires come from my inner desires. Fetishes like even whips or chain stuff already existed at least since Dark Age.

    I am sure they existed.

  • Yes. Definitely. Group sex and cuckolding are what I have discovered as sexual behaviors of old.

  • You wanna go back to the victorians times? To enjoy all kinds of fetishes while your a housewife 😄

    • Go away!!!

    • Where shall i go away? Are you ok... or you just snapped 😏

    • It's been a long week. And I'm tired of being hurt. Which you didn't do. Sorry.

  • Not sure. Did people have sex back in the Victorian era?

  • Of course. Locksmiths were highly paid back then to pop open those nasty chastity belts ;- )

  • Having sex with a woman while she was on her period was quite common and shaving was also considered erotic.

    Sexual history. Love it!

    • Thank you Zeus!

    • You're welcome Ms. Cups

  • Of course. But back then they didn't have dildos and vibrators that women can tease their men with, so they had to use fruit or vegetables. Cucumbers where in high demand. The kinks were more open because they loved torture and loved rough sex. I'm just guessing.

  • I'm sure they did even if they didn't discuss them openly

  • I think so

  • They would NEVER openly admit it , back in one of the most repressed era's in history.

  • wasn't the marquis de sade during victorian time or no?

    • De Sade was Eighteenth century.

    • well he may have influenced sexual practices in the victorian age

    • I doubt it, de Sade's works weren't widespread throughout society

  • Probably tongue or stocking fetishes.
