Both memory and smell seem to be controlled by structures in the very lowest are almost the very lowest part of the brain called the basal ganglia. It's not surprising that smells than can trigger memory. In my case the smell of a common medication that is used on the ears of dogs to prevent insects from biting the ears evokes strong memories in me because when I was a child and we had a German Shepherd puppy my dad used to rub it on the puppies ears to keep his ears from being bitten by flies. I had that dog for many many years and I remember vividly the smell and the dog himself.
