Situational. Watching is generally faster, more available and pleasing to the eye. The bad acting though makes it hard to really buy the situation. Reading a story makes it as believable as your mind makes it. You can be more mentally stimulated by reading and usually also find more niche material.
I'd say I prefer reading a good novel but rarely make the time or have the patience to find a good novel.
