An Illinois teaching assistant has avoided jail time after she admitted to sexually abusing a teenage boy in her special needs class.

Allyssa Gustafson pleaded guilty in September to one count aggravated criminal sexual abuse after admitting that she engaged in a sex act with a 14-year-old boy who was a student while she worked at Circle Academy in Urbana. The school serves children who struggle in traditional classroom settings.

While Gustafson faced jail time, Judge Roger Webber ruled that she was no longer a danger to the public. Instead of incarceration, she will receive four years of probation and will have to register as a sex offender for life.

Gustafson allegedly had at least five sexual encounters with the 14-year-old victim. The sexual contact began in March 2019 when he was enrolled at the school, according to WAND-TV.

Prosecutors said that Gustafson communicated with the boy over Facebook Messenger and Snapchat. She also sent him photos of herself in a bathing suit and lingerie. The boy's mother told police that she recalled seeing Gustafson at their home, but believed her to be a high school senior.

After seeing the photos and learning that Gustafson was 24, the boy's mother reported her to the police.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped a more serious charge of criminal sexual assault. Prosecutors hoped that she would serve some jail time.

Gustafson now works at a fast food restaurant and recently had a baby girl. During sentencing, she apologized for her actions.

I'm not opposed to having a dialogue about the sexual needs of disabled, and if mapbe we as a society should do something (I've read the Dutch (or was it the Danish?) have some kind of prostitution voucher; I don't know if that's the answer, but they're trying, at least), but abuse is abuse.

I hope I'm not the first to say this though... It's because of men that its a double standard. Why? Because too many idiot men high five each other on the back and say, "I wish I was that boy/teen" when a teenager has sex with a female teacher.

Does not matter if it's a female or male teacher doing it. It's grooming and molestation. Given that teachers are in a positions of power over students the punishment should be harsher due to it clearly being a abuse of their power.

I disagree with you. I see A LOT of women being outraged by boys being taken advantage of older women. Problem is, they're drowned out by other men praising the kid for getting laid by said woman as some kind of achievement instead of sexual assault. This double standard starts with men. Men as a whole need to stop condoning this behavior of boys being sexually assaulted by women. Only then will the double standard will start to reverse.

@MrNameless Bullshit. Show me one feminist website where this case was discussed with anything close to the level of fervor the Brock Turner case was. Show me the national news coverage of this case like the Turner case received. Yes, some men obviously view young boys having sex with older women through the wrong lens but it has nothing to do with the underlying issue here, which is the hypocrisy of the feminist movement, which calls itself an equality movement despite not giving one fuck about males, and the fact that males who commit crimes get judged much more harshly than females who commit the same ones.
