Do you think slut shaming is good or bad for society?

I'm talking about slut shaming men AND women.

We here in the states are quite prudish in my opinion, myself included.
Men don't realize how easy it is to get a "whore" label.
It can after people find out you masturbate, after you reject a guy, if you have big boobs and wear a tight shirt, wearing a bikini, sending nudes to your husband, homemade porn, even breastfeeding, and even for being a victim of rape.
Oh, and also being promiscuous of course.

Here's a story of a mother being harassed for breastfeeding. The man told her to go somewhere else and even called her a whore.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2016/06/16/new-mom-verbally-attacked-breastfeeding-public-target-connecticut/85972164/

Here's a story of a 15yr old girl who's "friend" took a pic of her without her consent and uploaded it on Snapchat. The girl was harassed and called names and she ended up killing herself:
https://wgntv.com/2016/06/10/girl-15-commits-suicide-after-nude-snapchat-video-leak/

I never understood why men slut shame women. I'm not saying women don't, we do. But it's usually out of competition or jealousy. This does not make it right or acceptable by any means though.
But don't men benefit from promiscuous women? On this site alone, so many guys throw fits that they can't get girls. Some even saying that all they want is sex but women make them jump through hoops. Why call her a slut then for enjoying the same act you wanted, with you? Don't you also enjoy seeing a woman's silhouette in her tight dress or whatever? Why discourage it by calling her a slut or saying "she asked for it"?
I'm not saying men don't get slut shamed (and no, player/fuckboy shaming IS NOT the same thing), and I'm not saying it's good to encourage men to be shamed. But this affects women a lot more.

Anyways, do you think slut shaming benefits or harms society overall?

Do you think slut shaming is good or bad for society?

  • Harassment in any shape or form is wrong. I don't think slut-shaming is ok simply because its none of my business. Regarding breastfeeding & that poor girl committing suicide that is just going too far.

Going off track sure they should be free to sleep with as many guys as they want to, but lying about their count number to their future partners is as bad. I don't slut shame, I think its none of anyones business. However I would judge when it comes to choosing a partner. I am not judgmental but would judge. Not dating someone promiscuous.

Slut shaming good or bad for society. They're not doing anything to anyone else are they? Are they imposing on other people? Is it having any negative effects on invidiuals that make up society, I don't think so. Its not good or bad for society. But is bad for person being harrassed.

  • when has anyone ever said "thank god we shamed people, it totally fixed everything"

    • It doesn't "fix everything"... it actually holds everything together. This isn't a black and white issue. People need to be told and discouraged from doing something wrong. When we tolerate individual's failure to adhere to common values or social standards, we can't call it an admirable pursuit of freedom. If we do, it becomes difficult to distinguish the innocent from the guilty... and good people are unfairly punished. Basically, I think it's the LACK of shaming that allows society to become so blind that it ignores rapists or chastises natural beauty. True immorality becomes the 'needle in the haystack', and many would rather avoid the haystack than pick out the needle. Freedom isn't about being able to get away with more types of behavior ... it's about having more responsibility and having more thoughtful judgement. We shouldn't protect people that are thoughtless and don't care about the consequences of their actions. It really doesn't help anyone.

    • Sometimes SHAME fixes things. DUH. Got to have intelligence and a conscience though. So you may not benefit from shaming.

  • I'm fine with slut shaming. Let's be clear, if the actions call for a person, to be slut shamed, so be it. People like to take common sense outta the equation for everything and putting things into a simple black or white scenario, when the world is gray

    • So it's ok to call a breastfeeding mom a slut? Or a 15 yr old girl who's pictures were taken without her consent and uploaded without her consent?

    • Like I said, common sense needs to come into play. Slut for breastfeeding? No, but let's clear things up. If a girl posts a picture of her breastfeeding, you know damn well some won't find it appropriate and might call her out for it. As for the 15 year old girl, besides being illegal, depends on the circumstances Like I said, people like to trivialize everything to pigeonhole everything into a yes or no scenario. The world doesn't work like that And even with that said, slut shaming isn't a crime in most cases (the are a few exceptions), as long as people have freedom of speech, you can't stop what people can and can't say. And as much as I'd personally like to, you sure as hell can't control what people think... For better or for worse 😑

    • @Antimillennial calls me stupid, yet the nigga can't even spell 😂. Fuck outta here weak sauce

  • its good. sluts are bad for society so discouraging the behavior is great.

  • I don't believe in sleeping around so I wouldn't date a girl who did but I never insult or shame anyone over the number of people they've had sex with because it's their life and they have the right to live it as they see fit without being judged. I don't know why more people can't just respect each other's beliefs and lifestyles instead of hating on anyone who's different than them

    • Having lots of sexual partners both increases one's chances to catch an STD and the number of those whom one can give it too after, and we have reached the point where the CDC reported 36% of women now have genital herpes (which causes cancer) and many STDs are becoming resistant or even immune to treatment (including AIDS). Further, condoms are only realistically about 83% effective, and most "sluts" don't use them. We are talking about deadly human plague rats.

  • I don't even care anymore. I just want people to stop talking about it here.

  • The Second Instalment of SlutWars: The Slutpire Strikes Back :v
Lol at Slut shaming... you don't need to 'shame' a slut/manwhore... they already shaming themselves... yeah I said it... you gonna cry now? :v

Hilarious MyTake tho... pure genius ;) I had a good chuckle.

  • I never understood why people get in other people's business about things like that. It's not my business who people choose to have sex with.

    • when you get aids from someone youve slept with, you'll want to know then

  • It's always bad for society! For those who said it is good, I have no respect for you!

  • 😂😂 sluts don't benefit those men who can't get laid. Women forget that what doesn't attract one woman doesn't attract all women. It's actually worse seeing the girl who loves sleeping around not sleep with you.

But I don't slut shame. I'm a proud prozzie user and polyamorous, couldn't give a fuck.

    • Be GRATEFUL a slut doesn't sleep with you. She/he will give you herpes or gonorrhea. Want a lifelong disease? I think not. Let them spread their diseases elsewhere!

    • @19blondie76 so they all have fun and I don't? The only disease I'm scared of is mediocrity. Something that has corroded my soul more than any viral or bacterial disease.

    • Excluding the incels, there are bigger issues. Having lots of sexual partners both increases one's chances to catch an STD and the number of those whom one can give it too after, and we have reached the point where the CDC reported 36% of women now have genital herpes (which causes cancer) and many STDs are becoming resistant or even immune to treatment (including AIDS). Further, condoms are only realistically about 83% effective, and most "sluts" don't use them.

  • I think it's wrong

  • It's women who do the most slut-shaming. Not men

    • It was a man calling the breastfeeding mother a whore. Look at this site, this question, mostly men are using the word "slut". In my own life, I can honestly say I've never been called a slut by a woman or girl, ever. But I've been called a slut by lots of men, granted it was mostly when I rejected them. But not even the lesbians I rejected ever called me a slut. I don't understand why some men claim it's women, it's mostly men on the web and in my own personal experience.

    • Because the question is ABOUT slut-shaming. Using that as evidence is stupid as fuck. However, let's take that logic and apply it to a similar situation then
      time.com/.../

Men are far more open with their slut-shaming than women are. Just because you've never been called one to your face doesn't mean women don't slut-shame

      thoughtcatalog.com/.../

You said yourself that women do it "only" out of competition and jealousy, which is the most common reason for it PERIOD
      broadblogs.com/.../

Don't sit there and act like slut-shaming is perpetuated by men towards women. The generic victimhood story of "men abuse, women receive" doesn't work here

    • I didn't say women don't slut shame. I just said that just this site alone that it's more prevalent in men. Dudes on this site always say it's mostly women, but it's probably about 50/50ish. Maybe a bit more or less.

  • I adhere to the Structural-Functional Perspective (sociology) so I think every thing, even crime, ultimately benefits society. However, on an individual scale, I think slut shaming is bad and it's not a behavior I condone, or would ever intentionally do to someone.

    • How does crime benefit society?

    • I'll answer this in two ways.

    • 1) Emile Durkheim's Basic Insight * deviance (in this case crime) affirms cultural norms and values. * responding to deviance (in this case crime) clarifies moral boundaries * responding to deviance brings people together * deviance encourages social change

  • Men, women, animals, insects, BACTERIA!!! WE ARE ALL SEXUAL BEINGS... society is just stupid. Everyone is secretly a whore inside. Reasons why people dont go forward with having sex is either because they'll get judged or catch a disease lol...

    • I mean cmon the only reason why its shameful is because we were tought by society not to be prideful about it. We humans were tought things. they aren't natural. Like how we go to school to learn right? Our parents teaching us right from wrong. Now imagine if there were no society, there would be no slut shaming.

    • "everyone is a whore" HAAA. Speak for YOURSELF, whore!

    • @19blondie76 the fact the yoy had to take your precious little time out to call me that, i mean cmon, you obviously got offended at the age of 30. "People who get offended obviously know its the truth". There fore, it really takes a WHORE TO KNOW A WHORE. Get over it AUNTY. haaaaa

  • Shame is a powerful motivating tool. Yes people should be shamed for being immoral

If a wife cheats on her husband or vice-versa The cheating partner should be shamed.
If a girl is actually a prostitute, she should be shamed. Same goes for male whores

We have to shame degeneracy, that way people are less likely to act like degenerates.

    • Agreed. The situation is getting to bad to bear. Soon, our entire species will be in danger.

  • Its bad, its not your business what consenting adults do in their own home

  • There isn't really slut shaming for men, it used to be calling men cads. However, women override that as they too often find it attractive.

By shaming men who were cads/players, and shaming women who were promiscuous, the point was to get women and men to bend their will to the betterment of society to fulfill their desires.

The blunt truth is you can already see the extreme opposite in the black culture. Rampant poverty, welfare usage, crime, most children are bastards, heavy child abuse... it destroys a community.

    • You forgot the most dangerous part: Having lots of sexual partners both increases one's chances to catch an STD and the number of those whom one can give it too after, and we have reached the point where the CDC reported 36% of women now have genital herpes (which causes cancer) and many STDs are becoming resistant or even immune to treatment (including AIDS). Further, condoms are only realistically about 83% effective, and most "sluts" don't use them.

    • @JMghow Hmm I know HIV is kinda treatable? But my understanding is it still costs a fortune to treat, and over time the medicines alone devastates the infected person's body.

    • True, although now lots of STDs (including AIDS) are become resistant to treatment, or even immune. Further, many of these STDs are worse than AIDS if untreated. I can't remember if it was gonorrhea or syphilis that resembled leprosy if untreated, but I do remember that syphilis eats the brain and causes insanity.

  • everything's a story now huh...

    smh.

  • No its not

  • So, u just said women shame each other. I would say more than men last time I checked. I sometimes avoid them.
The reason there is a bias is because women in USA still try to play the 1950's Step Ford wife role in that they are sweeter and gentler and should be treated as such. They should take the kids in a divorce as they are caring and motherly. Men should not hit a girl cause they are fragile even if she punched you. It's a woman's choice and a women's body so don't go hugging on a girl until she is ready...
You see where I'm going with this? If we acted like complete equals then there be less of a bias.
But I have to completely disagree about men shaming more or the same as women do to each other. No way. If a girl was slutty, guys either slept with them, slightly teased them or like me, avoided them.

    • Look at this poll alone lol look at the responses. Only a few women agree with slut shaming while more than a handful of men are ok or even encourage it. And even use the word "slut". Also, the person who called the breastfeeding mom a whore was a guy, while the person defending him was a woman. I'd say it's about 50/50 give or take, but men are more ruthless about it.

    • Really have to disagree. Unless the man is bitter. The beast feeding thing the dude is a just a ahole with anger issue. I still see women talking more crap about other women. I rarely see dudes talk crap bout other dudes unless to their faces as jokes. Seriously, I have been around a huge range of dudes. Unless the girl was bitchy to him a guy will not slut shame a girl if he thinks he has a chance to boink her. That's dumb. And if the guy has a girlfriend he really doesn't care bout some girl who sleeps around.

    • I'd disagree. And it's not men against men, men slut shaming women. Men don't really slut shame other men I'd definitely agree. But they still slut shame women.
