Do You Think There Should Be More LGBTQ Representation In Television?

A friend of mine told me she wish she saw more than just straight people all the time, but I don't know. I feel like lately directors are putting more LGBTQ relationships in things. Even if it might be to benefit off of the community I still see representation being done and in the works. Yes there could be more of course but I don't think it's as big a issue as it was before. Not currently.

What are you guys thoughts on it?

I could be wrong.

  • Unless you are trying to sleep with someone the least interesting thing about them is their sexuality. A good character is a good character and their sexual preferences should be a small side note if anything at all. So to push LGBQetc characters is just pushing an adgenda. A good read about this is Ann Rice talking about how she handles gender and sexual identity. Are Louis and Lastate lovers? It's never quite clear is it, but certainly implied.

  • Nope if anything I need that stuff needs to sit on the back burner for a while. I think a lot of people myself included are kind of tired of having that stuff shoved down our throats in every form of media there is, news, games, movies, TV, music, cartoons.

Your gonna over saturate the media with it and then people will get sick of seeing it.

And to be honest most of the "representation" in the above mentioned media is pretty meaningless anyway. A lot of times it adds nothing to a show or movie unless the show or movie itself is based around it or it has a pivotal role in the plot. Most of the time it's nothing more then a diversity hire/character. Essentially the gay version of the token black guy who's there just to say hey we got a gay person in our show we're woke.

  • No to many already in my estimation..

  • no thank you. i think there's already way too much lgbtq exposure crammed down our throats. most people are not lgbtq. most people don't care for lgbtq, which doesn't mean they "hate" them, it just means it's not a part of their personal life.

i think this unnatural and forced exposure by multiple lgbtq characters and hosts in every shit, you actually reduce social acceptance, cause it just so obviously feels forced.

  • Get woke, go broke.

I don’t need my face rubbed in a social message when I am on my own time relaxing. It completely takes you out of the show or movie and ruins the experience.

  • I don't mind it until it becomes the whole character or the writer is just soapboxing

  • Lgbt is a small percentage of the population very very small. They should make gay t. v. channel like BET and gay movies like love Simon.

Go watch gay CW Riverdale shows

    • Lili reinhardt as Betty cooper? 🔥 🔥 🔥 and the sexy feisty red hewd Cheryl blossom? 🔥 🔥 🔥 Riverdale is basically a softcover porn buffet. There's a flavor for everyone.

  • No lol the decline in standard's started when we began seeking to meet quotas instead of giving people their jobs on merit. Its so shallow its cringe worthy just hearing you mention it.

    • Identify politics is the politics of division.

  • I see gay people everyday without even knowing it, maybe it is the same when watching TV.

I don't mind more, I just don't want them to add LGBTQ for the sake of doing it. It is bad writing.

    • Look at Captain Ray Holt from brooklyn-99 as a good example

  • Only if it's relevant. Most of the time it's just not necessary or relevant to the show.

  • I think they already show more than enough. It feels like it’s being encouraged, not just respected.

  • Lol, are you fucking kidding? LGBTQ is about 3% of the population. They are in 95%+ of all television shows and movies. Your friend is a mouth-breathing moron.

    • 3% is a lot more than it sounds. Also, where did that statistic come from? Do you have a link and does the study say how many people they asked? I would love to know where you heard that

    • @AnjLikesDogs Sorry, I had older data... thanks to all the good publicity, it’s up to 4%

      www.newsweek.com/how-many-people-are-gay-1446353

4% is no where near the amount of representation they have in major media.

    • Thanks for the study!!

  • Nope, this shit is getting out of hand, I watched about 45 secounds of a tv drama about queen Elizabeth when I saw a black guy and an Asian woman were members of Queen Elizabeth's court and respective servants of the royal household. And I turned it off. I was surprised that guy Pearce played Robert Cecil. But when watching something that is a time period drama, I would like to see something that looks authentic. So having members from minority groups in film and television, just because they are not well represented is not a good reason for them having such rolls. They can do this shit, and I will just turn the TV off.

  • No. Way less. It isn't criminal, but it sure isn't something to celebrae

  • There has been quite a lot of it lately especially in Cartoons like Owl house.

  • In what way the adverts here in UK, every one must think all we have are mixed radical families. The occasional lesbian couple so gay men...

  • I think the how directors are portraying LGTBQ characters in some shows I’ve seen make a big deal out of that one characteristic. I like to say that there are gay characters in many shows, not characters who happen to be gay. There’s more personality and characteristics to a character then their sexuality. Like a trans person should be just a character who happens to be trans, and that characteristic of theirs shouldn’t be their only focus.

In general, that’s what I see in a lot of shows and movie that tries to have diversity. An African American character often is not just a character who happens to be African American. An Asian character often is not just a character who happens to be Asian. And so on.

  • No, those agendas are being shoved down our throats literally every day.
I don't give a fuck what the character's sexuality is, if a character has to go around showing their homosexuality, then I want straight characters showing their heterosexuality as well. Some shows become almost a porno just to show 2 girls having sex together and make us feel the rainbow or whatever, while disregarding any hetero relationships and not giving them that much attention.

But adding sexual things that are exclusively to show "YES THIS CHARACTER IS GAY" makes it cringe and fake.

I don't focus on characters because of their sexuality, I'm pretty sure almost nobody does
If the only thing I remember about a character is them being homo, then that's some shitty terrible writing, and that's sadly what happens in new TV content trying to kiss liberal media's ass.

    • I agree, I feel conflicted because despite me being bisexual and understanding why people want more wholesome reputation. I still think the general LGBTQ representation is everywhere rn to the point where it's annoying. Even in person, people make their whole image/personality their sexuality sometimes. And it's cringe, I'd rather not know and just see it introduced regular than shown for the whole world to see in a dramatic way. Because it's not even a relevant thing until the persons love interest or personal choices like that comes into play. I don't know, it's frustrating.

  • Well here's the issue LGBT are still the minority groups here so to be on tv you have to have a minority group who are qualified actors at the top as well which isn't easy at all you don't find people like Johnny Depp or Robert downy jr very often.
The other issue is you can't force actors to be "gay" most actors can kiss girls because they are heterosexual but if you ask a heterosexual or lesbian to kiss a guy they can refuse it causes issues unless you have two gay actors who are in short supply.
It isn't something that will happen often simply because most incredible actors are heterosexual maybe 1 in 10,000 are LGBT

    • Dude the point of acting is to pretend to be someone you're not. Plenty of very well-known and highly-regarded straight actors have played gay characters. And I'm sure gay actors have played straight characters. Hell, statistically speaking, a gay actor is MORE LIKELY to portray a straight character (unless he's really going for the "gay typecast", which for a struggling actor is like admitting financial defeat).

    • @SomeGuyCalledTom Yup and acting has only gone so far there are many many actors who have refused to kiss others. Some actors are happy to kiss a guy but most are not if your gay and I asked you to kiss a girl you'd feel disgusted because you don't like females plain and simple. Your whole argument has been answered above you've just repeated what I've emphasised an actor can act to be gay but if I asked you to kiss a guy can you? Probably not easy.

    • Well I wouldn't, but I'm not a professional actor. My point is that there's no positive incentive for an actor to refuse an acting role that doesn't reflect their real life sexuality. Of course some actors will turn down a role they don't feel suited for, but let's be real here, acting is a job like any other, and actors gotta eat. Maybe actors who are big names in Hollywood have enough clout to just turn down acting roles left and right, but many lesser known talent will take what they can get. Anyways, I've forgotten why I felt compelled enough to debate this in the first place lol, I just thought it was an interesting aside to make note of

    • Show All
