I know, it is easier said than done. I would say, making sure that you go to a bar with trusted friends, if you stay at a friend's house, make sure that more than one person knows (and if you have a doubt about the friend, don't stay). Walking back from the grocery store, either make sure that you have someone else with you or the area is truly safe. There are no silver bullets unfortunately so one just has to be as careful as one can be. But I agree that the premise of your question is very valid.
