I would not feel insecure if she wore a thong bikini however I would feel at unease if she wore a microkini because she would get stares from both genders and our reputation in the community would be tarnished (especially if you are living in a where everyone knows virtually everyone else).

No, I wouldn't wear thongs. They are way too revealing. No one has to see 90% of my ass and I don't have to see 90% of anyone's ass. I prefer one piece swimsuit with longer leggings, just like this.

It’s not really normal. Usually it’s party girls looking for sex at party spots/events. Most regular girls wear standard bikinis and plenty are even insecure about that when they have good bodies. When I use to go surfing/bodyboarding when I was younger, the few girls that did surf didn’t wear thongs while they did it. That’s just a model shoot with some surf boards thrown next to them.
