    • Everyone used to charge extra for data originally, and texts used to be extra too. Most packages would give you something like 30 free texts, and after that, you paid for each one. One of the reasons that MVNOs got so popular (these are cellular companies that don't own their own network - they rent bandwidth from one of the big carriers - Mint, Cricket, Metro, etc. are examples) is that they didn't charge extra for texts when the big carriers did.
