It dosnt. When it's done right it can be a good thing. But for the majority its not good. Half of marriages end in divorce. Maybe another 1/3 stay together for kids. Women initiate 80% of divorces

It's just a commitment of love and life long partnership, we obviously know around 50% fail so it's a huge scam and bullshit, but for those who manage to do it well, it's probably very fulfilling. We have so much freedom in our lives these days that marriage doesn't seem as important anymore.

Honestly I see very little benefits for those in western societies especially where females have the advantage. Only benefits I see are if the two partners are almost perfect people and perfect for each other, which is very VERY unlikely.
Though marriages in places where I like for example? They're essential, sex before marriage is extremely frowned upon, you NEED marriage to start an actual family that's not just full of bastard children, divorce is kinda frowned upon too, family structure is really strong here and it keeps most families stuck together. Also, neither the man nor the woman get anything worth it after a divorce, so it's a lose-lose situation, it's not just a legal bind, but a social and religious one, forcing both partners to not go anywhere.
