There are a couple of reasons for this:
1. Porn is, and has always been intended as, FANTASY. And most fantasy is exaggerated. Superman having to drive places in a car, and able to be killed with a gun, would be a lot more boring, right? So he has to have exaggerated powers. A bigger penis was assumed to be more pleasing to viewers, though this was actually a secondary concern in the beginning.
2. The one most people don't realize, but was definitely a factor and still is, is that it makes producing porn a lot easier. Why? Well, the pic above shows director Stanley Kubrick using one of the most compact 35mm movie cameras available in the 1980s: the ARRI 35 II. Most movie cameras were larger than this - some 16mm cameras were smaller, but not a lot smaller. It was not easy to get these big cameras into places where they could see the penetration - but if a guy was bigger (longer, really), he could create a bit more room for the camera. It was also possible to do positions that would be impossible to see at all if he wasn't extra long.
The porn business really began in the late 1960s, and film was very expensive (the film costs were often 2/3-3/4 of the entire production budget), and because shooting porn was illegal, most porn shoots had to be done quickly, it didn't take producers long to realize that they needed to do everything they could to ensure that they could get the needed shots quickly and reliably - on the first take as often as possible. Bigger dicks thus were a benefit to the producers (who were mostly being financed by the Mafia out of NYC), because they could reliably deliver movies on-budget - it wasn't really about the women's pleasure at all. They were hired to perform - with the women typically being paid 3-4 times what the men were paid - so the concern was completing the shots so that they had a product to deliver to the mob bosses who owned the adult book stores (which installed coin-operated "loop viewers") and adult movie theaters where these movies were shown.
Eventually, shooting porn effectively became legal (in California and then Florida) in the late 80s due to court cases that upheld the 1st Amendment, and thus became legitimate businesses, but by then, the "standards" had been in place for 2 decades, and weren't going to change.
The main criteria for male performers to be hired was a huge dick, and being able to get it up and finish it off when called on. Viagra/Cialis mostly solved the latter issues for producers, but huge dicks are still a requirement today. What you see in porn are guys who are in the top 0.1% in size, with only a few rare exceptions. If porn guys were hired based on height like they are based on dick length, porn guys would have to be 7'2" tall or taller - which wouldn't be any more representative of the entire population as their dick size is now.
Because its easier to see it penetrating and its a fantasy.
I wonder the same thing but porn is not real. It is the same thing with what goes on with porn, it seems most of what they have with various categories is not realistic and more fantasy than what real world people do.
It could also be that they need them larger for better recording, since most porn never goes balls in.
I know it's not real. But why are dicks bigger in porn?
I figure it is like basketball, people are not normally that tall in the real world, it is what people want to see though for a better game. Those that make porn think people want to see that.
Because porn in itself is unrealistic and fantasy. That'd be like younger me wondering why girls in anime are so skinny with big breasts, same idea here.
