Porn is the reason why WOMEN started shaving/waxing so often, but it wasn't why men preferred it. I was doing my best to convince my girlfriends to shave in the 80s, back when porn had to be rented from video stores and you had to be 18 (and I wasn't yet, and neither were the girls), so it wasn't common for kids to have access to anything but some old Playboys.

But there were two reasons that it became popular for women to do: smaller bikinis and porn in the mid-90s. Starting in the mid-80s or so, fitness magazines started to take off as a genre - they largely didn't exist before then - and it was popular for them to go to beaches around the world for photoshoots. Soon these magazines were bringing back pictures from Brazil, which long had a trend of micro-bikinis, which had really started the trend of shaving and especially waxing, as the bikini bottoms were often much smaller than would be enough to cover pubic hair. These pictures could be seen all over, including doctors offices and other waiting rooms, and women started buying smaller bikinis as a result - and started getting "bikini waxes" and "full Brazilians" - only a few at first, and mostly out of Los Angeles and Europe, but it spread from there.

Also in the early 90s, French-cut lingerie became the style, with their very high-cut leg holes, which resulted in narrow crotch panels. Porn stars began wearing these (every porn star in the 90s wore tons of lingerie - it was the thing at the time), and so they needed to get bikini waxes so pubic hair wasn't spilling out the sides. Of course, regular women also started buying lingerie in this style, because it was popular, and they also needed to get waxed to wear it.

In the mid-90s, a handful of porn stars went completely bare, and saw their sales and popularity increase. Porn, like any other performance-based industry, is extremely competitive, and when the girl next to you starts getting more bookings and makes more money because their videos sell better than yours, then the girls are going to do what she was doing, and so by the early 2000s, waxing bare was becoming common in porn - but by then, it was already very common in major vacation places like Los Angeles and Miami and Hawaii because of bikini styles, so while porn perhaps helped the trend spread to the middle of the US, the trend had already been solidly established, by women, on the coasts.
