I believe that our society has gone overboard on sex.
Don't get me wrong, I love sex. Most of us do. Sex is one of the most pleasurable things we will ever experience in our lifetimes. But is sex really better than anything?
I don't believe so. Here's why. Call me old-fashioned, delusional, or any other label (I won't be offended), but I believe that youth and family are more universally (I. E. as applied everyone) valuable than sex.
The youth are quite literally the world's new life. Everything we enjoy came from what, at one point, was new life. Without youth, civilization and all the pleasures therein would slowly deteriorate. Oh, and technology would cease to progress due to a lack of dreamers.
Family structures are what enable tribes, nations, and civilizations to be built. Everything we enjoy came, albeit with many steps between, from a family structure. Additionally, without some extent of family there would be no new life, no future, and no greater purpose in life (like trying not burn down the planet for example) beyond our own selfish desires.
So, those are the reasons that I believe youth and family are valuable even from a materialistic perspective. Now, back to sex.
Why is sex valuable, and have we really placed it on the pinnacle? Sex is. . . sex. Of course we love and desire it. Not only are do our bodies naturally desire sex for the instinctual purpose of reproduction, it feels great and it is often a sign of our love towards another person! But have we placed it on the pinnacle of value? I believe we have. Young adults spend on average (including those who abstain from sex) almost 100 days of the year having sex! That's a lot. Oh, and the average number of sexual partners for males and females is 6. That would also be a lot if sex was not at the pinnacle. Oh, and I won't mention the countless religions that are either based on sex or have sexual rewards.
